She’s part pit bull terrier. I can see it in her head shape. She reminds me of my Onyx. He was a black lab/pit bull/Great Dane. He was a gorgeous extremely intelligent baby. He was not always patient and he hated other male dogs. We just lost him to kidney failure at 13 years old. I miss him terribly. Love your channel. I learn from every episode.

Everything Stonnie says is spot on. Doodles are not for everyone, and getting the proper training early is a must-something we failed to do. But now, it's time to re-group and press forward. Thank you, Stonnie!

No they’re not, and yet the cuteness factor keeps them flowing in. I’ve trained some really squirrelly doodles and some brilliant ones. I’m seeing the cross breed with the poodle can make a difference in behavior. Thanks for sharing your comment😎🐾

I learned the word proprioception from Stonnie. I have tried to challenge my pup. He is now 17 months old and when he visited the vet today he knew he was going on the exam table. I didn’t encourage this (set them up for success-not failure) but he voluntarily leaped from a standstill onto the table.(46 inches) The vet tech said she had never seen a dog do that. I recommend Stonnie’s methods.

My guess as to the breeds behind Poppy would be Labrador Retriever mixed with Bull Terrier or Pit Bull. The close-up of her expression really had me thinking of these terrier breeds, along with how you described her interactions with other dogs.

That smaller cream colored short haired pup, I'm wondering if there's a little bit of Field Lab, a little bit of Vizsla, a smidgeon of Weimaraner, and a splash of Pittie? Love how you show how each type of dog tends to behave/learn as well as the challenges of waiting too long to begin. It's almost like many trainers are doing what the school system is doing, worrying too much on memorizing a set list rather than HOW to learn. Their little brains are sponges when very young, focus on concepts learned, and gradually add in more complex skills. But a "what's right/what's wrong" mindset at a very basic level needs to be introduced early. God bless you, Stonnie in your efforts.

"If you wait to learn how to use a body then it's harder" So true Stonnie. I got my current dog when he was 2.5 yo. I assume because of his behavioral issues he was basically kept indoors or contained in a small yard. I spent a year teaching him manners, obedience and building his confidence and teaching him to use his body (for good instead of evil). He learnt and earned his freedom, specially on long hikes. All my previous dogs were pups when I got them, this adult dog was a challenge, but I tell everyone he is my best dog yet because I had to undo everything and build him from the ground up. The way you train and provide adventure experiences for the dogs in your care are proof that thinking outside the square when training pay dividends

Stonnie I think the is THE BEST video you’ve done. As a dog trainer you hit great points on many things. I shan’t your opinion on whether or not you have seen intact males like gooses age give you any extra challenges. I ask because as a trainer of only 9 years I’ve had mostly neutered dogs to work with. The intact males I’ve dealt with in adolescence and early adult seem more “opinionated “ in cooperation. I’m in Chicago so, city dogs with many distractions. You’ve taught me many things I integrate into my training as I develop my style. But I still have a long way to go to where I want to be. Such wonderful education! I’ve always naturally leaned into dogs like you do. Then I actually went to school for it. BEST decision of my life! And my 5th and FINAL career where I am in my happy spot😎❤️🐾🐾🐾 Thanks for all your efforts for us dog lovers!

A very good video, Stonnie, one of your best. Poppy looks and acts like our yellow lab female, even to the way she makes sideways nips at other dogs. Ours is unbelievably competitive at every game involving finding or fetching. And she gets really upset if her brother is let out of his crate first at an adventure spot. Her brother isn't as high drive, just a notch less, and he's been easier to train. They are both great dogs.

Just found your channel and have really been enjoying the videos. I think a lot of people, my family included, just get dogs because we love them and want them around. Nothing wrong with that really. But as I’ve gotten older I’ve really tried to educate myself on how I can be a better owner so the dogs can be better and have fuller lives. Especially given the fact that I like rescues so will inevitably up with a Poppy (likely a lab pit mix), or someone else with “questionable heritage “ hahaha. I think it’s really important for them that I continue to learn and get better at my dog parenting skills.

My black lab is like poppy and Lilly. I suspect she has some pointer heritage. Somewhere. She looks like a lab and loving, but has a lot of pointers attributes and a low threshold like you said with poppy. She is post adolescent and ball obsessed and has had altercations with other dogs because of it. Actually everything you said about poppy and Lilly reminds me of mine in terms of sensitivity to the environment and prone to having nervous energy etc

Hey @StonnieDennis, you talked about it some times before how bird dogs are destined to work in front / ahead of the trainer in opposite to retrievers. My question is how do Bird dogs like the Vizsla rank in that? Their race description has retrieving parts in it as far as I know, for the GSPs it’s probably the same. Would you just say that retrieving in those breeds is just taught but not what the dogs primarily want to do?

Is there, possibly, a dog that can thrive in a very tiny space? My space is 300 sq ft with a 300 sq ft patio with direct access to nice walking path around the perimeter of the 4 acre lot. My sweet GS, Jessie, left me last year after 15 wonderful years (in TN on 76 acres). I've downsized to the extreme. I expect that no dog could live a great life in a space this tiny. But...watching the videos about small breeds has me asking if there's a particular breed that would truly thrive in a space this tiny - with of course, multiple long walks a day. 🐕🦺🐩🦮

I’m sorry for your loss. That’s very tough losing a long time dog I know. Took me 5 yrs to be ready for another dog. In a small space consider carefully the dogs energy needs as well. What’s your lifestyle? Ya gotta match each others energy. I’ve trained folks with Havanese from pups here in Chicago studio high rises. But yes the smaller breeds can manage but do your homework on breed temperament. Mutts in my opinion are the best dogs, but Havanese I like. Hoping Stonnie responds to your question. Thanks for asking.❤️🐾😎🐾🐾

@@duckicontreras7573 Thank you for your kind reply. I researched a top ten list for small spaces and/or for seniors. The Havanese was on that list. Sadly, I don't think any of the dogs I read about would be a good fit for me. I can't help it - I simply love big breeds. When I met my husband, he had 3 Rottweilers and was fostering a Boxer, I was fostering a Saint Dane. I've had small dogs and I love all dogs, but with big dogs - I didn't just have them - we had each other. I'm thinking that if I remodel - make the patio a sunroom, there would be plenty of room for a big mutt.❤ Meanwhile I may volunteer to walk dogs at the local shelter. Thanks again !
