Teaching little Cashy (7 years old) to wakesurf was as simple as this.
I have never taught a kid how to wakesurf so I thought a lot about how I was going to help our 7 year old get up while not being scared alone behind the boat.
Since these wakeboats have a V drive with a prop far away from any danger I knew I could sit off the swim platform to keep her feeling safer.
I figured if I hold her super close and put my feet on the base of her board I’d be able to help her keep straight until we can add some tension to the rope and push from the water to her board.
I think the hardest part for her is putting enough pressure against the board to make it flip up on it's own to then be similar to her wakeboard.
So I kept my feet on the base keeping it up like her wakeboard which allows her to keep her weight centered between her feet and we can pull her up.
Once she was up it was all about keeping a little more weight on the back foot keeping the nose of the board out of the water.
Our next big hurdle will be having her try this on her own without my help keeping her board flat against her feet. Can't wait to share that moment once it happens!
Then from there the next step is to learn how to adjust weight to keep in the pocket and feel the push from the boat wave. That will come but at least she got this part down for now and the rest will come with time on the board!
Luckily our Axis Wake boat allows us to make a super beginner friendly wave for her to learn how to eventually drop the rope. We can set it to be a longer more mellow wave so she has more time to adjust to keep up with the speed of the wave and slow down but not fade out the back.
You can see that everything worked just as I thought it would and it only took this little princess a few attempts to get up and rip her cute little SoulCraft Board!
Both Hype Mom and I are so incredibly proud of Cashy for being so brave and strong to make this learning process so easy. She’s one rad little girl and her talent far exceeds anything we ever thought prior to being parents.
