thank you Karla! you're so so sweet. Im seriously considering joining the Gather Round wagon! :) It looks like such a fun curriculum. I would just use it for science and history.

We had a lot of fun with it! I would recommend just buying one unit at a time so you can see how it works for your family!

I think it's so important to remember that curriculum is a tool not a task master! We used gather round this year and I've been reluctant to continue it next year but I think I'm going to try some tweeks and see how that works for us!

YES! This is SO TRUE, and I forget it all the time! I love GR so much more now that we leave some things out and just go at a slower pace.

I’m all about using certain curriculum as a resource, or tool. Adapt it as needed:) I would love to try GR. I’m curious to know what other curriculum picks that worked for your kiddos this past school year. You always have such great ideas! Not to mention your 3 kiddos line up almost exactly with mine...so your tips are very useful to me 😀

We have had fun mixing in GR and doing some units as a family! I am actually working on getting videos out on what worked for each of my kids this past year. I shot the video on what my 2nd grader did, but I need to get it edited! I will do videos for my 5th grader and middle schooler as well. I just need to find the time! How old are your kiddos?

@@karlacanon2507 oh that’s great! I look forward to watching those videos when you upload. I have a rising 2nd, 6th and 8th grader (7, 11 and 13 years old). Watching all your curriculum videos have been so perfect, plus I like your approach, it’s very similar to ours:) There are some big changes to homeschooling and DL schools in B.C. that are being proposed, so hopefully we will still get all the freedoms to educate the way we do in the future 🤞! Not sure if Alberta is facing similar changes. Homeschooling had a big boom 💥 this past year.

@@mommyof3smarties Our kids are very similar ages! So fun! There were some changes to the home education regulations last year, and thankfully they were all very positive. I hope any changes in BC are in support of homeschooling families!!

I liked your video and need to try only printing a couple pages instead of trying to get through all of them. Doing all the pages everyday just didn't work for us, I may need to read the teacher guide myself and summarize some of it too. That can get a bit long and over my kids heads sometimes. I have other curricula I like to work on too so twice a week as a shorter lesson sounds good. Totally off topic, but would you mind sharing the paint color on the wall behind you? I'm looking for something like this right now to paint my house and I'm struggling.

Printing out just the pages I wanted to do (normally 2 per lesson) completely changed how I felt after each lesson! Instead of feeling like a failure because we couldn't get through all the pages, I felt like a success because we completed what I decided was important! I do like the teacher guides, but if it is a complex topic, sometimes I prefer to just read a good non-fiction picture book on the topic and leave it at that. Sometimes going in-depth just confuses my kids. If I keep it simple they actually get more out of it sometimes! Things I'm always learning as I go :) And I would totally tell you what the paint is if I knew - but I don't! The walls have been this color since we bought this house 9 years ago and I haven't touched them!

I have a son with Autism and I have him do just the notebooking page and I pick 2 other pages I feel are most important like the science and history or if there is a good language page. 😉

Hello!! Thank you for the video, it’s so very helpful. I’m interested in trying gather round, but also love IEW… have you found a way to integrate the 2, so they wouldn’t have to be taught separately?
@karlacanon2507
2 жыл бұрын
Since we have used IEW for years, I found it pretty easy to integrate the two! When we took notes from the lesson, that was practice making a key word outline. Since my kids were familiar with all the IEW units, we would practice different skills depending on the unit and what the Gather Round LA idea was. If it was a report, then we practiced IEW unit 6, if it was a paragraph, well that's more unit 2 or 4, creative writing we used the unit 3 method. So! That's how we did it and it worked quite well. Since we have worked through all the IEW units it didn't matter as much if we did things in order, so it made it easy to mesh the GR ideas with the skills we used from IEW.

i have been really wanting to try gather 'round but for science and social studies/history. is the geography sections enough to cover social studies/history or would i need to supplement with a social studies/ history curriculum? also would i only do the sections labeled science and geography?
@karlacanon2507

There is a ton of meat to the GR curriculum and you would not need to supplement with additional social or science. I would just swap back and forth between choosing a science focused unit and a social/history unit. I would just pick and choose the pages each day that are the best fit for your kiddos, and just don't feel like you need to do them all! :)

We are working through our first GR unit (Artists) and it is not going well at all. My kids are just hating it, one refuses to do it completely. She feels it’s boring and the other will “get it done” but doesn’t enjoy it either. They’re both huge art-loving kids and they chose the unit so I’m very surprised that it’s just not working. It doesn’t feel engaging enough. Seeing how you’ve adapted it to work is very helpful. I have started eliminating some pages and include KZitem videos and use the app and Facebook for suggestions. It’s helped a little but not enough. Any suggestions on how to start and structure the lesson in a more captivating way? I’m thinking that reading from the guide first thing is part of the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

Maybe tou may try to use the extra activities that are included in the teacher's guide.

I'm sorry it hasn't been a good experience so far! I haven't done Artists but I'm guessing there are lots of hands on suggestions. Maybe slow down and spend several days (or even a week) on a lesson they think is interesting, and really focus on doing some of the hands on projects listed in the teacher guide, facebook group, and app. That might bring some fun into it, and then you could read just a small section of the teacher guide, and only do one of the student pages per day. Add in some KZitem movies or maybe some library books that are suggested. Hopefully that helps! You can always ask your kids what they thing you can do as a family to make it more fun. When I give my kids input on how we do things that always helps!

Yes, absolutely!!! If you buy a digital unit, just be sure you choose the one child package and it is MUCH cheaper!
