'Whites' are just light skinned black people and 'blacks' are dark skinned white people. It should not surprise anyone that people can love one another regardless of how light or dark their skin is anymore than it surprises us when we see a black and white cat playing together. And like Ali was not afraid to make unpopular choices, which in his case was defending Ali's refusal to be drafted. Ali once said "Howard and I are like peanut butter and jelly". Muhammed Ali Embodied everything that is pure and honest. He spoke without a filter and sometimes paid the price for it but he was always honest. He stood up against the oppression of black people, when most black people with money and fame were socially compliant and showed deference to the white man but Ali was different, he was black, proud, and beautiful and made black people believe in themselves and helped removed the doubt that was imprinted in their minds after years of slavery & segregation that some how they were inferior. I'm glad to have lived on this planet at the same time as this great man. He was loved by everyone in the world, he transcended language & culture, no matter who you ask in whatever language they'll tell you who Muhammed Ali was and what he stood for. Ali was interviewed by a lot of people during his career but the most memorable interviews had to be with Cosell. They were like brothers--they didn't always agree but they brought the best out of each other. They had chemistry. But much credit to Cosell. He publicly defended Ali and the unequal treatment of the black athlete at a time when it was against the norm to do so. In that respect Cosell 'told it like it was' because 'he never played the game.' I grew up in the 70's. For those that weren't born yet had it not been for Howard Cosell Monday Night Football wouldn't have become what it became. Cosell was loved and hated equally. But, man, he was much better than the garbage we have to listen to now during a broadcast.

Cosell was the most unique sports commentator ever in a symbiotic relationship with the most unique professional athlete ever. They raised each other’s careers to the pinnacle of success and became the best of friends in the process. I was a boy when Ali and Frazier fought for the first time in 1971. I was a Frazier fan because he was a Philly icon and I was born and raised there. I didn’t realize how significant a historical character Ali would become at the time, while my police officer father despised him for his refusal to register for the draft, his outspoken nature and conversion to Islam (well, that and his rejection of being the “right kind of Negro”). Perhaps you don’t recognize a walking deity while he is in the process of becoming one. They were two of the very best at what they did no matter your personal opinion of them. I have come to idolize Ali and broke down in tears when he lit the torch at the Atlanta Olympic Games in ‘96 and again at the announcement of his death. An absolute original whose like we’ll never see again and Cosell should share the same dais with him in the afterlife.
