"My name is Bruce Howden, and I'm a farmer. My father bought the first farm in 1939. I think he was 30, and he farmed here his whole life until he was chasing his heifers on the railroad tracks at 88 and collapsed and died. That's 58 years. I call this his domain. We raised corn and delivered it to all the mom and pop stores. From here to Pittsfield, my father raised pumpkins and he started with the Connecticut Field pumpkin. And that's Howden Pumpkin's parent. Every year he seeded from the best pumpkins, and so it would get notched up every year better, better, better, better. And then one year, he went out in the field and there was this one plant that had great big pumpkins on it. It became known as the Howden Biggie. The first one was the Howden pumpkin. It's in all the seed catalogs."
"Berkshire Grown raises people's consciousness about food, farming, open land, things that are very important to people."
