Just a thought. If you wanted to maintain what you had inside the 3585B, why not reinstall the original BNC, then get an adapter such as SMA, N or SO239 to female BNC and slip it on from the front panel. This does not fix the messed-up BNC but once you slip an adapter over it, you don't have to worry with it again. I looked for a BNC female to BNC male but didn't see one. Though, there are the others I mentioned. My 2 cents worth.. On ebat, I searched BNC Male Plug To UHF SO239 PL-259 Female Jack RF Coaxial Adapter Cable Connector

Very good unit and excellent trouble shooting skills, learned a lot from your videos. I got set of 3585B in very poor situation, but finally restored. One question, does 3585B perform "Instrument Preset" automatically? no fixed interval, within 1 minute or few minutes, with signal feeding or without, same situation. thanks agian

The instrument will do calibration routines periodically automatically (I think every 2 minutes or so). These will occur even if there is an input signal being monitored. I believe the auto calibrations can be disabled though in the configuration options. The instrument presets are user defined settings which are stored and recalled once, either on initial startup or if recalled manually. I don’t believe it should change presets sporadically. Thanks for the comment.

Hello Free Electron, thanks for your reply, I confirmed that it auto calibrate and also perform unexpected Reboot with beep, I tried to study either +5V DC, seem C1 in A72 is poor, new cap was replaced and after tested, voltage is same as old cap, but after running for awhile, the system was crash, system frozen, after reboot, the keyboard only few key responded with LED. after few time of ON/Off , all key are gone and all no LED, keyboard is gone. Would like to know what ripple level or waveform from A72 TP1 +5V? poor +5V source will damage to the digital Board? thanks

Great repair, really good series of videos! Did you check the RF section rail to ground resistances after replacing the tantalums? When replacing tants I try to use ones rated at double the rail voltage - 30 volt tants for a 15 volt rail.

Thank you for cutting the connector instead of the board...you had me scared there for a minute.

@@krandall5285 Cutting the board is a bad idea. Sometimes I think out loud going through the options. Thanks for the comment.

Changing the BNC was probably not worth it, especially because it may impact the analyzer performance. Kudos for fixing the analog display module. I would probably want to replace that noisy fan :)

Unfortunately changing the BNC was necessary as it was damaged beyond usability. The trade off is maybe performance issues but given the low frequency range of the unit (40mhz top end) I imagine the new BNC will have very minimal if any negative impact. FWIW after completing repairs I performed all of the performance tests listed in the service manual. All passed with no issues. Thanks for the comment.

Yay, love how the path moves thru filters and switches and so on, but with discrete componentry because year and low freq requirements. I remember similar modules showed by Shariar from TSP YT channel, but with ceramic substrate and very expensive components and construction. Very interesting :)
