great video i used this to wire up a 35 watt hps light for my room they mostly retired hps in my area so i want to have my own lol.

if you want mercury vapor in a hps fixture, just replace the ballast with a proper mv ballast, it will be overall better for the mv lamp

Hi! I did more experiments, and found out that 35-150w hps lamps work on metal halide ballasts rated double their wattage. The lamps will last longer running that way.

running a mercury vapor lamp with a igniter is a big no-no, it will eventually damage the starting probe since mercury vapor lamps are designed to start by themselves without a igniter

Scott, I to have a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Calligraphy, and I, like you, have an oil change "fetish". Just one question sir, and that is, HOW IN THE BLAZES DID YOU FIT UNDER THAT CALLIGRAPHY WITHOUT ANY JACK STANDS? I wish I knew your secret, because I do not trust jack stands. Thanks Bob

so i recently bought an hps light for my yard, and im hoping maybe you can help me? i was curious so i stuck a 40 watt incandecent bulb in it i found lying around and to my surprise it lit right up! how does the igniter not blow out the bulb when i do this, thanks. i also used a power meter and it read 43 watts, 3 for the ballast im assuming. so how does the igniter know when to deliver the extra voltage and when not to?

Hey where can I buy the transformers and igniters? Is it possible to use a industrial string light split up from 1 larger transformer/ballast? I would like to run 5 150 watt lights.

My hps circuit doesnt look like that. The mains go into two boxes, which are both about 3x5x3 inches. Then from one of these two boxes, wires go to the socket.

without seeing anything... what i did was run a specific transformer and igniter to do this... im sure it can very .... depending on bulb sizes and wattage u should be able to run various bulbs on same fixture

Could I say use a 750 watt ballast for 5 150 watt hps bulbs on an industrial cord/string? Or should I buy 5 separate things for each bulb. Great video

@@sdrake74 Hey thanks for replying! I took a good look into everything after messaging and it should work. The only difference is the bulbs run a bit more than the 150 watts each so its safer to get a 1000 Watt ballast for the 5 / 150 watt bulbs that I will use. Got one off e-bay cheap yesterday coming in the mail soon! Thanks again.

Well I have a 150 watt HPS ballast I want to change it out to using a mercury vapor bulb inside so I see on your description that has a 150 fixture, is that a regular 150 mercury vapor bulb be putting into that 150 ballast fixture?

I wouldn’t do this. Mercury Vapor bulbs have a higher arc voltage than high pressure sodium bulbs. Not sure of the wattage of the mercury Vapor bulb that’s shown in the video, but mercury vapors have an arc voltage from 80 volts to above. That 150 watt HPS bulb has an arc voltage of 55. The mercury vapor bulb will cause the hps ballast to overheat. Also, mercury vapor bulbs shouldn’t be used with an ignitor. The high voltages will eventually burn up the starting probe (located on the bottom of the arctube) and the starting resistor. This is particularly true if there were a power interruption, as the bulb would have to cool down before it will restrike. While the bulb cools, the ignitor will pulse the bulb until it cools down and restarts. That will eventually ruin the bulb’s probe and resistor. Mercury Vapor bulbs rely on the ballast’s open circuit voltage and inductive energy in order to strike. Same story applies with probe start metal halide bulbs which with those ballasts can run both metal halide and mercury vapor bulbs of the same wattage that the ballast is rated for, since they have similar arc voltages.

I guess I don’t understand what your doing because your saying that you are wiring it so it can run high pressure sodium and mercury vapor but you just wire the ballast in it’s normal configuration or am I missing something
@sdrake74

this is something that i threw together because of other videos on KZitem... it could be its normal configuration... i really not sure just trying to simplify the circuit

@@sdrake74 ok I will be trying this with an actual 150 watt mercury lamp because my 175 watt just cycles on the hps. So that should work ok :)

Not only is it dangerous, but also irresponsible to be running any HID bulb on incorrect ballast. Each type and wattage of HID lamp should be run only on ballast specified to run that specific lamp. Some ballasts can run multiple types of lamps, and the sticker on ballast will tell you which lamps it will run. If anything, you will shorten the life of the lamp and maybe even the ballast or components attached to ballast. Metal halide lamps can even rupture and break, though usually when reaching EOL. Just be careful!

I meant that the current from a s55 ballast is about double the current that a h39 lamp is meant for
