When a person can sing this good, she does not need to jump all over the stage. The voice is the entertainment.

I so agree. Unfortunately they started to pigeon hole Whitney, God rest her soul, into no talents like her husband or Madonna who had to be show persons because they didn’t have anywhere the God given talent Whitney had, God rest her soul. No one, not Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, etc has no where near the talent of Whitney.

Whitney was very sensitive, they made jokes about her dancing on In Living Color tv show. And she was booed at Soul Train Awards after criticism that her music was watered down to appeal to white audiences. This dancing and the more R&B sound was to cater to the music trends of the early nineties and to give her a more hip (black) image.

PLEASE TAKE NOTES UP AND COMING SINGERS.... The fact that she was freaking HOARSE..... Whitney's voice was definitely going during this performance AND YOU CAN HEAR IT.... Yet and still, she KILLED THIS PERFORMANCE. For those of you who are not aware, THIS IS A TRUE SINGER. She had an issue with her voice, yet she found a way to still sing and sing in a different way which worked for her without straining her vocal chords and sounding flat due to being hoarse. This is artistry at it's best. There is no lipsyncing, there is no auto tune, Whitney did this LIVE. I thank God for blessing me to know her in the generation that I did, and getting to experience her gift during the 90s. It's because of God, that I knew that I wanted to be a singer like Whitney and I am. In Whitney's own words, "I learned from the best, I learned from you."

I'm just going to say what I think. I believe this after this performance she went back to Clive Davis and said " I'm not a dancer I'm a singer". All this hopping around, being out of breath rubbin all up on dancers. That ain't for me. Being winded, running back and fourth. Uhhh..naw. I'll sing. You want all that dancing. Book Janet

I don’t think that was case, Whitney wanted to prove that she was more than just a singer who just stands there and belt out songs. It’s nice to see her incorporate some dance moves. It was different for her, mind u she was dancing. Singing live. And was hoarse and she did it so I give her A+. When u have a voice like Whitney u don’t need to exert by dancing. In my opinion she was so hurt by the response from soul train awards that she wanted to prove to world that she was so much more

First time I've seen her perform with a headset! She can't really dance, bless her, but great try. I hate this arrangement of the song though. Much prefer the remix that was released as the main version everywhere apart from the US. A classic
@jamesdavidkmoss

I think you are right...I think the L.A and babyface sound was abit old hat by then and Bobby and Sheena took the best of that sound,but the remix is really something special and still sounds unique and fresh over 30 years later.Also around this time she was probably dancing alot more due to the fact Both Janet and Paula were bigger at the time and were doing dance-pop and moves to match and wanted to keep up with them as her new album didn't match their sales at this time..that's most probably why she made that comment at paula singing the whole album out of key...Little did whitney know that in a couple of years time,she would have her most successful single ever with basically just her voice on it.

This was W trying to cope with Madonna and Janet when she never ever needed to. She still sounds superhuman in spite of her soar voice and can dance and sing at the same time better than both of them. Bad advice from her team though as her performances of How Will I Know and IWDWS on awards shows with just her heavenly presence and Diamond voice were more than enough and are the ones that stood the test of time.

I actually don't think she had a cold or vocal danage... the hoarseness wasn't consistent enough. All that exertion was making her breath hard, which can force the larynx to act as a sort of valve to control air flow as well as produce sound. It's hard on the larynx, and harder for the folds to stay smooth (think of squeezing a ballooon's opening as it deflates). She wasn't accustomed to moving that much while singing, and wasnt able to adjust seamlessly. Having said all that, this is my favourite live performance of the song... she danced great and the occasional hoarseness actually gave a cool edge to the performance. Loved it :)
@nunyabiz3668

I definitely see what youre saying, but her tonal rasp was consistent throughout 1991 on tour as well. It was reported during this era that a she had a chord tear. You can also tell by the way her voice quickly flipped into disconnection (whistle exclamation) in the beginning yell she did (first few seconds of the video) that her diaphragmatic support was compromised. But yeah, the choreography probably exacerbated the issue, which is probably why she didnt attempt the upper belts much on this song live.

1:40 to 1:46 proves she had rhythm, could dance and keep up with choreography. It was her backup dancers that were the problem. The guy to the furthest right hand of screen, at top around 1:50 proves my point. Other than that. I always thought she could dance. It was the fact that many tried to compare her to Janet Jackson, which was incredibly cray, since we knew Janet had been dancing since a child. Whitney had been singing since a child. They only did that because they were jealous of Whitney and needed something to make fun of her about.
