Mattie Anti she had lymphedema which is fluid backing up in the tissues because there are no lymph nodes. The fluid had no place to circulate so it pooled in her arm. It is a common side effect of a mastectomy and in the 70s there wasn’t much that could be done especially when they were trying to save women from dying.

In her final singing appearances on television (most notably on the Mike Douglas Show), her right arm would remain in a fixed position during her performances. By mid-June, she was confined to bed. She entered Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on July 10. On Thursday, July 12 at 10 am, while lying in her husband's arms, Riperton died while listening to a recording Stevie Wonder had made for her. That Sunday, following a funeral service attended by more than five hundred mourners, Riperton was interred in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. Her epitaph is the opening line of her most famous song: "Lovin' you is easy cause you're beautiful." Wiki

I felt this welling up of emotion at 2:37 especially when she sang "I don't wanna go". Just contrasting this with the fact that she would be dead less than a month after this, is quite painful. Yet her bravery to go public with her diagnosis and her sheer drive is testament to her grace and dignity. Lymphedema is a condition characterized by the accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the tissues, leading to swelling and often causing discomfort or limited mobility. It commonly occurs when the lymphatic system, which is responsible for draining excess fluid from tissues and helping fight infections, is damaged or obstructed. In the case of individuals with cancer, lymphedema can occur as a result of various factors. One common cause is the removal or damage to lymph nodes and vessels during cancer treatment, such as surgery or radiation therapy. Cancer cells can also block the lymphatic vessels, impeding the normal flow of lymphatic fluid. When lymphedema affects the limbs, such as in Minnie Riperton's case with her right arm, it can cause stiffness and immobility due to the excess fluid buildup. The accumulation of lymphatic fluid leads to swelling and increased pressure within the tissues, which can impair muscle function and restrict joint movement. Over time, this can result in the stiffening of the affected limb, making it difficult to perform daily activities. Furthermore, the stagnant lymphatic fluid in the affected limb can alter the composition of the tissues, leading to fibrosis (formation of scar-like tissue), thickening of the skin, and reduced elasticity. These changes contribute to the stiffness and loss of flexibility experienced by individuals with lymphedema. Managing lymphedema typically involves a combination of techniques, including manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy, exercise, and skin care. These approaches aim to reduce swelling, improve lymphatic flow, maintain or restore limb mobility, and prevent complications. It's important to note that while lymphedema can be a challenging condition to manage, advancements in treatment and interventions have been made to help individuals maintain a good quality of life and minimize the impact of the condition on their daily activities.
