I used to e-mail back and forth with Tom Nousaine. He was amazing. I was very sad When he passed away and I thought the world has forgotten about him because I've never seen him mentioned in the press by anyone reviewing subwoofers. I'm so delighted that Hsu remembers and paid tribute to him. Please pass my thanks and appreciation to Dr. Hsu.

There is one huge problem that no one has mentioned yet with this being such a new release: I now have rattles coming from 20 feet away in my living room during the low notes that never presented themselves before. They should definitely include some dampening material with the purchase of this thing 😄

What gets me the most is that when peak volume is brought back only 5db, the distortion numbers plummet to Perlisten D215S kinds of levels. So, if you buy 4 of these subs and put them in a medium sized room, you'll easily hit reference levels at the RSP with almost non-existent distortion. In fact, it'd be difficult to find speakers in the same price category who's distortion levels will match the subs at those levels. It's a pretty incredible product. Especially if the loudest you ever play your system is 115db peaks. So dang clean.

I have a sub with the option of High Level and Low Level inputs (Rel G2). No difference. But there are two situations where High Level is better. First, unlikely but you may not have a pre out. Second, is where your pre-amp is different from your power amp. Imagine you have a solid state pre-amp and a tube based power amplifier. Now if you use line level input then your main speakers have a signal from a tube amp while your sub has a signal from a solid state source. This is undesirable as you want sub and main speakers to have the same signal.

Is applying dsp from factory to create a super flat response the best method for sound quality? Because it is so room dependant and many people will be applying their own house curve/room correction. So you would be eq'ing an already eq'd response right? So for hsu to provide an excellent response without eq would that potentially be better somehow because it wasn't dsp'd already
@jameslarson2277
Ай бұрын
You are right that a super flat response isn't very important since the room will wreck the response anyway, but it's still nice to have, especially if you are going for a multi-sub setup. Also, the less EQ that is used overall, the better the system will perform.

James, per the spec sheets I have seen for my V1 and V2 Monolith subs there is a difference with the V2. The Monoprice website states that the V2 has 3 magnets weighing 270oz. Per the PDF spec sheet I have for my V1 it states 2 magnets weighting 216oz. The Arendal, given it’s sealed nature and relatively compact size, provides a surprising amount of oomph and integrates perfectly with the Maggies. However if I wanted more infrasonic impact, would this Hsu sub be overkill in this context and perhaps not integrate as well?

Am I crazy for using a car audio subwoofer? It models well in winISD and I am happy with the musical side of it, for home theater I can see it moving but can't hear it below 30hz, box port is tuned for 20hz, maybe I have hearing loss?
@liamspawn
Ай бұрын
@@Mike-jm5wt I once wondered the same thing. Then I heard someone say in a KZitem video “what’s the difference between a car sub and a home sub?” The answer is whether the sub is in your car or inside your house.. lol. Nothing wrong with using a “car” sub, can often times be a better value too. I’d recommend getting a pro amp and not trying to rig a mobile amp + computer power supply though
@bbfoto7248
Ай бұрын
@Mike-jm5wt Did you model and tune the subwoofer enclosure for the car environment (factoring in the transfer function of the vehicle i.e. "cabin gain"), or for the in-room response in your home's listening room? The two are wildly different. Do you have a decent microphone to actually measure the in-room response? There's nothing wrong with using a car audio subwoofer driver in a home audio subwoofer application as long as you are modeling the response correctly for the two different environments and designing the respective enclosures appropriately. For example, I use Two of the old Infinity BETA 15X car audio subwoofer drivers in one of my vehicles with a miniDSP C-DSP 8x12 DL processor and about 350w max available to each sub. And I also use Two more of these Infinity BETA 15X drivers in my 2.2 home HiFi rig. BUT the enclosures for each environment and application are COMPLETELY different.

Big box gives a shorter port, gives less group delay. If I remember my simulating right. Also, building a sub with linear freq. response is trivial. Come on! The trouble is when you put them in another box, as a room or a car. Then you wont hear anything of that straight curve... So no DSP is a big negative. You can buy them seperately but... A great unit, but talking about freq responses in subs is weird.
@bbfoto7248
Ай бұрын
@OlaJstin Most people who will be using these subwoofers are going to be using them with an AVR or system that has some form of Bass Management or EQ/processing specifically for the subwoofer(s) to correct/adjust for the room/environment. The same goes for any decent car audio system that will be using a multi-channel DSP to shape the response of the subwoofer and integrate it properly with the midbass or midwoofers. Obviously, the enclosure design and tuning will be much different for the two environments, and this DOES shape the inherent response for each environment appropriately.
@OlaJustin

A 18 inch custom Italian, powered sub that pushes 1920 watts RMS and 4300 Peak for same price as those listed in this video isn't on competing subs list? Tremendous amount of port turbulence. PSA subwoofers have a serious design flaw in that there is huge amounts of port chauffing/ port turbulence because Tom did not design the vent to have enough surface area...Tom needs to use larger slot ports to reduce port chuffing but he stubbornly refuses to do that.
