Thanks for the railroad history of Japan. This one is interesting since I worked at the Englewood classification yard [Houston-Southern Pacific] in the late 1960's. I thought it was extremely interesting how 'brakemen' hopped those cars and rode them while using those foot brakes. Retarders slowed the cars down in my day and my job was to walk the train once completed to insure the cars had coupled up and then rode it out to another staging track.

The lever frame in the signal box at the hump yard was getting a hammering from the signal man! He was very rough.
