UPDATE: Have a wedding to attend in Hua Hin upcoming so tried to book that new train #31 again. Online it said sold out so then called the SRT hotline. They said can no longer reserve for short trips (like Bkk-Hua Hin) on what is essentially a 2cnd class a/c seat but also converts into a bed for longer journeys (makes sense actually). So for short journeys looks like one either selects the 8 a.m. commuter seat a/c train, or 3rd class on others (no a/c, can get hot and seats are not comfortable). Also SRT gal said online bookings cap at 15% of total seats. But can book at stations directly. So if it says sold out online, try at the station or call SRT hotline: 1690 - can also call and reserve in advance and then pay at the station within 24 hrs.
