British music is so often passed over in favour of the rest. Parry and Stanford are up there with the greats.

+Phil Homes you are fully right, and I say this as a Pole. I like also Frank Bridge ,Elgar and Vaugham Williams. Bristish composers are incridibly underrated.

I love this symphony so much. There is never a dull or weak moment, it moves forward as assuredly as any of the great symphonies, and has an abundance of lovely themes. To me it combines the best of Brahms, Elgar and Dvorak.

When listening to Parry there is no doubt whatsoever that one is enjoying English music at its best. This symphony is an example and is beautifully played by the LPO with an understanding Bamert.

Charles Parry and Charles Standford definitely need to be brought out from under the shadow of Elgar, as great as Elgar was. We are fortunate to be living in an age when the music of the "lesser-known" and "unknown" composers are being rediscovered and recorded.

It is to me regrettable that Parry and Stanford are so often bracketed together - IMHO two very different talents, and for me Parry the music of Parry is infinitely superior to Stanford in intellect and feeling.

Agree. But as far as shadows are concerned, it´s somewhat mandatory not to forget the firts pieces of Holst and V. Williams. Indeed, Parry was an excellent amateur.

I agree completely that Stanford and Parry were very different composers. Stanford's style as more mystical, poetic, and bard-like while Parry took the German Romantic style and put his own personal British stamp on it. Parry was the forerunner to EIgar. I don't know why people compare Stanford to Brahms. There are very few similarities between the two in my opinion. I hear far more similarities to Dvorak in Stanford's music. There are far more similarities between Parry and Brahms.

How times change! George Bernard Shaw called Stanford, Parry and MacKenzie a mutual admiration society: you could tell they were great composers because each one vouched for the other two. He championed Elgar as an underdog! Personally, I admire some of the works of them all, regardless of who is, or is not, now fashionable.

Very authentic performance of this beautiful and orthodox symphony! I cannot understand why this is not so popular outside the Great Britain.

I note that Parry, who was educated at Oxford and held an academic position at the Royal College of Music in London, was given an honorary degree by Cambridge University in 1883. Was his subtitle for this symphony his way of thanking them, in the same way as Brahms thanked Breslau University with the Academic Festival Overture?

Why is this symphony so unknown? I never have heard of this composer until we started with rehearsals with our amateur symphony orchestra. Luckily we will perform this symphony next month 😅, we enjoy this music so much!

Stanford's two 'sea symphonies' - 'Songs of The Fleet' and 'Songs of The Sea' - recorded with Norman Del Mar, are so wonderful and distinctive for the presence of solo baritone and chorus included with the orchestra. Don't miss them!

It is very unfortunate that public performances of his music in the USA are practically non existent because he was a master of musical composition. His writing is rhapsodic, dreamy, and just downright beautiful.

Many persons say that Parry`s compositons were influenced by Brahms. Indeed. But I was asthonished when I heart the Andante, esp. 21:00 to 23:00. This is Bruckner in origin culture! Wonderful work!! I love him!

I can't understand why Parry's music isn't more popular generally. I have recently been learning some of the Shulbrede Tunes for piano and have played several of his organ works and I gain a deep sense of enjoyment from these. I also feel his string music is worthy of mention. I am outside Great Britain and this is the first time I have heard any of his symphonies.

rather interesting picture too, isn't it..look carefully at each and all of the people depicted, and their interaction..what idea of English society at that time is the painter seeking to convey?not a realistic one, surely..a good choice though for quintessentially genial, spirited English music..comparisons are not very helpful, but I agree that to claim real acquaintance with English music, you should know these symphonies and this composer;Jerusalem his great blockbuster, based on Blake's inspiring poetry.

Wonderful music, which captures the essence of Englishness in music and this way before 1900 when Elgar made his great breakthrough. I wonder what Brahms would have thought of it, had he heard it...

What was Elgar's great breakthrough? When you look at the musical output it wasn't very much. The first symphony went down well. In my opinion the 'cello concerto starts off well then dies on its feet.

Vince Turner Not very much? The Enigma Variations, Sea Pictures, The Dream Of Gerontius, The Apostles, The Kingdom, Introduction and Allegro, Cockaigne, Symphony 1 and 2, Falstaff, the Violin Concerto, the Cello Concerto, String Quartet, Violin Sonata, Piano Quintet, The Spirit Of England, The Music Makers. No, not very much

I thoroughly enjoyed it! Some genuinely witty turns in the scherzo -- and that slow movement has real power to it. Initially such a lush, long melody -- but disturbed by episodes of genuine crisis and renewal. Sure, it isn't the most distinctive symphony ever composed, but I really feel Parry has gotten a bad rap.

Apologies, but this is not a particularly well known painting, and is more about English society than Cambridge. I can imagine Parry liking it, but his symphony isn't exactly in accord with it. Details of it would be well worth having.
