I remember that story. The inexperienced young family from Germany went offroading to explore the desert and got their rental van stuck. Their remains were eventually found, having wandered away from their car. All were deceased. Sage advice: if you get stuck in the desert, NEVER wander off. Your chances of being found are much greater if you stay with your car, especially if you're near a road.

From what I was told, the assumption was they left the vehicle in search of a military base that was nearby, thinking they could find help there. I was told that military bases in Germany have a perimeter guard that drives around, similar to a prison, and they could get help that way. Not realizing most of those remote bases just have a stick in the ground and that's about it due to how remote they are. Regardless of why they left the car, it is a tragic story worth repeating so others do not make the same tragic mistake!

@@MakeItWithCalvin The irony of Death Valley is nobody ever died there when the first emigrants crossed it on their way to the gold fields at Sutter's Mill. The majority of people who have actually died in Death Valley are those who have gone in search of adventure and died from lack of experience and proper preparation. And Death Valley history is rife with legends of those whose mental state compels them to go there specifically to die.

@@MakeItWithCalvin I doubt that theory holds much credibility. There are no military bases in or near Death Valley.

I'm still trying to figure out what Huell Howser's "awkward moment" was that caused this family's demise. Maybe the Dweeb who posted this BS will find the balls to explain it.

@@lancasterritzyescargotdine2602 do you watch Californias Gold ever? This is literally how Huell is. Isn’t stupid either, part of his charm actually. But no, Huell always changed the subject awkwardly or made weird off hand remarks. Like the episode in Lompoc about the giant US flag grown out of flowers. He’s showing the picture of the flowers to the widow of the man who planted them and goes “your husband made that” lmao no sh|t Huell 😂 that kind of thing.

My feeling was the scene recorded was supposed to be loosely scripted talking about the desert and the added story about the family was extra and kind of made the segment feel melancholy so Huell cut the scene short

The whole thing should have been cut and left on the cutting room floor. It's nothing but stupid and reflects negatively on Huell! This what our drug culture brings us. Aren't we blessed?

Definitely he was. We met him once and had lunch together at Roy's Cafe in Amboy. Ford had just come out with the new Explorer SUV and Huell and his crew were driving a beautiful Cayman Green version. He was just as personable in real as he was on TV.
