I am armed with a 44Magnum. I am an experienced Bear Safari Guide and if you guide long enough, you run into bears like this one which approached us. The best thing you can do is stand your ground, have your bearspray ready, and make yourself big and loud when necessary. @patriciasawyer24 bear spray is a highly effective deterrent. Check out what the park service says about bear spray. I personally have used bear spray a number of times on problem bears with a great success rate. Brown bears come around the lodge, and when they do, sometimes you have to forcefully get them to leave. You have to understand your weapon for it to be effective. Most people greatly over estimate the distance bear spray is effective. It's about 10 feet. Outside that beat spray has no PRACTICAL effect.

He’s old. Can’t tell how old but old and he looks a bit thin, not sure what kind of eating season he’s had but a hungry bear is a ready to roll bear. I was injured in a bear encounter in Alaska 25 years ago. I was NOT attacked but I still spent two weeks in the hospital. To this day I see grizzly bears and feel my heart rate go up. They’re just so big in real life! I was camping, I exited the tent and my situational awareness was not peak, I had a major lapse in judgment and walked through a bear path without realizing I’d crossed between a mother and cubs. I was not a threat, it was midsummer so they were well fed, and I did the only thing I knew to do: Go fetal, cover my neck and head. She ran towards me and I dropped. No point in running, climbing or swimming, they have us beat. She wasn’t feeling terribly aggressive toward me, she was curious though. She used her paw to push me, to check me out…I can still smell her fur and hot breath. She was snuffling around me checking me out and sort of batting me around to see what I was made of. It felt like hours but was probably more like 30-45 seconds. I had lacerations all along my midsection and thighs, I also had a broken clavicle, punctured lung, and ruptured disc. She didn’t want to hurt me, but they’re just that strong. I couldn’t even yell, the wind was knocked out of me and I couldn’t breathe. I had a major infection from her paw flora that’s why the hospital stay was so long. Respect bears, they’re awesomely powerful.

When my uncle lived in Alaska, he told us about the hand cannon he took fishing with him. I asked, why the hell do you need a firearm to fish? You're not shooting the fish. He said, sometimes, the bears want the same fish. Let them pick their spots, go down river and enjoy. If a bear wants your fish, let it. If a bear wants you, make sure you have a big enough caliber in your firearm. Me, being from Virginia, never thought of that. Sound advice though. Be prepared for whatever you may encounter in your environment and enjoy what nature has to offer. After going to Alaska myself about a month ago, I see why people love it so much. Charging is more of a defensive behavior. This one stopped chasing the salmon, looked at the people, began scent profiling the wind coming from them and then made a precarious small step toward them to center his body to them so that he could chase if we wanted to. The read was correct by the guide and the verbal command was obviously a useful cue to stop the curious probing this bear was beginning to display.
@PackerManForLife
Жыл бұрын
@@MountainStreamLives while, yes, the guide was correct in being defensive, this bear 100% had no interest in anything to do with the people. You see the red salmon in the water mid video. The bear sees them too and follows them as the salmon went downstream. However, the people are too close for the bears desire. When the bear follows the salmon but gets too close to the people , it stops. The bear was guaging whether to follow the salmon while being uncomfortably close to people, or to ditch the salmon while prioritizing it's own comfort & safety. There was definitely no aggressive intent by the bear

@@ForrestMccroy It's not. Several folks have been killed by bears while spraying the bear point blank right in the face. It keeps curious animals honest which is the vast majority of cases. It doesn't do a damn thing against a bear that's desperate to kill you because it hasn't eaten in weeks or extremely aggressive because you got too close to its cubs or startled the hell out of it and its now in fight mode. There have also been studies that some bears can build up a tolerance to it if they've been engaged with it several times. Much like pepper spray with humans. It's really effective when the person isn't committed and it's their first time. There're also some people where it has little effect at all. You see the same with dog spray. It also has a ridiculously short effective range. That means if the spray fails, you're now way too close to a very pissed off animal to engage with a firearm without taking some damage. This guy boasts about his 44mag that he carries not realizing that if the spray fails, he isn't getting that revolver out of its holster without getting mauled in the process. Most bear sprays have an effective range of around 10 ft. A bear can cover that distance in well under a second. That revolver isn't even going to clear leather before the bear gets to him. This is compounded by the fact that most bear sprays are deployed using two hands so it's difficult to have your revolver in one hand and the spray in the other.

@CalebJacques See, I would end up totally screwing myself because bears are SO CUTE! I'd be standing there baby talking to it like it's a giant puppy or something. My only chance would be with a bear who felt sorry for me being such and easy target, lol. The only thing keeping me safe is that I live in Iowa and don't spend much time outside, let alone in the woods. The only real threats around here are coyotes, which I do hear on a regular basis but they seldom are seen in town, well at least not the town I currently live in anyway. And the occasional gray wolf may wander down from Minnesota but they don't stick around, apparently. At least the DNR claims there are no actual breeding packs around here. We do have a LOT of rattlesnakes, but they're easy to avoid. Realistic threat is the brown recluse spider and sometimes a black widow but the black widows don't seem to come after humans since we're too big to eat. Lol

Who was that one guy who lived with the bears and the bear ended up eating him and his girlfriend? While the tape recorder was still recording? He probably thought he was safe.

@@IdahoRanchGirl He lived with the same grizzlies year after year and knew them very well. He got upset at an airport and decided to go back and then encountered a grizzly he never met before. That is the grizzly that killed him. I also like to mention that most of the bears we're beginning to hibernate. This bear didn't do so well on his food gathering and was a little too thin to go hibernate. That is what got him killed.

@@ronniemaclaine5234plenty of idiots who live with wild animals who get offed by the same animal. They are wild for a reason. Never assume you are an "expert on animal behaviour". Animals have been known to do the unthinkable.

You can always tell grizzly bear shit by the cowboy hat and sunglasses in it.

Crazy, cause most of the fatal maulings that happen where I live (Montana) are people form out of State.

Very polite bear. You said you have experience with this particular bear so he probably didn't consider you a threat because nothing has happened to him before when encountering you.

A humvee with a 50 cal on the roof is the only way you’d get me to enter grizzly bear territory.

This is equivalent to a bear harassing you every time you go to the supermarket.
