6:00 Please don't use this! It's made of compacted wood shavings and honey, which entices the hamster to eat it rather than chew it. The wood shavings can block their intestines, which is basically certain death. Apologies if this sounds rude - I know you're doing the best you can for your hamster (I've been following their story for a while and I'm amazed at how far they've come), and I thought I'd let you know :)

8:35 Try putting holes very close together and all the way around the lid, right along the edge where that line ridge is. Than simply use a box cutter to cut from hole to hole in a straight line around the lid. The piece you want to remove should come right out.

Thank you! I’ll have to try that for the next cage I do, or maybe if I change my mind about this one :)

Hey little tip! You can use the soldering tool to melt off the plastic to use the metal you want. I've done it with plastic for my isopods. It takes a bit, but at least you don't have to worry about cracks or sharp edges

Awh he's adorable 🥰 you did great taking him in, and that bin cage looks awesome so far! I tried cutting a lid the same way you did and had the same issues 😅 I later found out that the key to cutting the plastic smoothly is using a drill with a rotary tool! Who knew 🤷♀️ Also, those edible logs generally aren't recommended because the honey encourages hamsters to eat the log rather than just chew it, and the woodshavings that are in them can build up in their digestive systems and cause impaction 😬 I used to use them too until I found out! I don't think they include honey in the UK versions, but I avoid them anyway just in case But all the other stuff you got looks great! I think Erin's Animals used topsoil for her hams too and it worked well for them ☺️

Thank you very much! I saw that too (about the drill) but couldn’t find any of the actual rotary pieces in store only the ones for sanding :( Also, thanks for letting me know about the logs! I’ve found topsoil to be the most pure in terms of ingredients so for now that’s what I think I’ll use, no problems so far :)
