SO agree, I've been pushing them for a long time. I've loved watching a huge praying mantis in my mostly native plants though she really loves hunting on the Asclepias. I'm sure a few butterflies have become a meal but that's nature. Folks using chemicals has really hurt the butterfly population, miss the clouds of them I used to see.

Thank you so much for talking about natives! It's so important to spread the word that the origin of the plant matters and that there are beautiful natives regardless of where you live. There is no reason why North American gardens should be 90% European and Asian plants as is the norm now. It is so rewarding to see how much more life (pollinators and birds especially) native plants bring to the garden. Also, the plants are so much more hardy because they are adapted to the climate and soil type already. There are really no downsides to natives in my opinion :)

Just kills me that folks like an area enough to move there & then promptly replace the natives with plants from elsewhere. They seem to fall prey to the old " if I didn't plant it, I don't know what it is" syndrome. Learning to identify natives when young helps a lot. Hope garden centers pick up the ball better on promoting natives! I'm not above moving those that are endangered by power line spraying & bringing them home. Just breaks my heart to see a diverse native plant spot turned into a sea of ragweed due to widespread herbicide use. Maybe Round-up is in cahoots with allergists!
@melaniea8301

@@katiekane5247 agreed. I think a lot of it is lack of knowledge and I was definitely there not that long ago. I have many natives in my garden this year (bought from nurseries) which I had never seen or noticed when going for walks outdoors before. Now that I have learned to identify many native plants I sometimes find them in the wild and I enjoy it so much more. Same with learning to identify birds, pollinators, caterpillars etc.... I also follow 'garden answer' on youtube and in one of the Q&A videos recently someone asked if they would consider a native garden area and she mockingly answered no because all that's native there is brown grass (eastern Oregon). I looked up native wildflowers for her area and there are many, beautiful ones. I was shocked that someone growing up in a nursery could be so completely disconnected from her environment...and pretty turned off if I am being honest. But many people think this way before learning about native plants.
@pansepot1490
3 жыл бұрын
Melanie A I completely agree. I also used to follow garden answers but I have somewhat lost interest because of their complete lack of consideration for their local environment. Their gardening style is extremely water intensive and it’s disappointing that they don’t even consider trying drought tolerant plants on at least a section of their property. Especially when on the internet one can find so many examples of beautiful, elegant and stylish water wise gardens and xeriscapes.

SO thrilled to see natives featured. I've long encouraged people to use them, now if garden centers would offer more! Excited about that Vernonia, I love seeing that bright pop of purple growing along the roadway, especially in a damp, sunny spot. The foliage on your cultivar is quite nice, will look to add some to my beds. Got all the natives you featured except I grow Rudbeckia triloba. Bigger flower display but IS short lived & will self seed. My asters are looking great right now, really shine as other plants are fading. I'm gonna transplant some pale blue & yellow ones that are in endangered by the power company spraying, they've ruined SO much area & it's ALL ragweed now. I've tried to talk to their maintenance division but I think it's ingrained behavior. A strong native plant population actually suppresses tree growth through competition. Maybe the Round-up distributors are getting kick-backs from the allergists! Still too many people think the Goldenrod is making them sneeze, keep educating folks about it though.

I love your gardens and your knowledge, and appreciate the information regarding native plants, which are mostly the same as Canadian native plants. However, I do not understand your lack of success with Coneflowers. I have several varieties of Echinacea that I have had (the same plant, not reseeded) for up to ten years. I planted White Swan last year in the Spring and it did fantastic this year. I think it may be your soil or your drainage. They really do prefer heat and neglect, and I am happy to oblige. Very confused that you find them short lived, and also that you feel they self seed which mine do not, even though I leave the seed heads on all winter. If I want more, I divide them in the Spring which they respond well to. I enjoy your videos and your soft, gentle voice, and continue to watch every one.
@pansepot1490

I have read elsewhere that echinacea is a short lived perennial so evidently it’s not just her problem. I think last week Monty Don (the host of Gardeners world on BBC) introduced a new perennial, a hybrid between rudbeckia and echinacea that has been bred to produce echinacea like flowers on long living plants. That’s evidence that even professional breeders think that echinacea is relatively short lived. Lucky you for having conditions that allow them to last so many years.

Off topic, but wanted to thank you. Last year you did a tour of your indoor garden room. I noticed your lush big coffee plant. I had gotten a small 3 -4 inch coffee plant in March 2019. It was barely growing and just one stem. I had asked you how you got yours so bushy and large. You told me to be patient, that it was very slow growing in the beginning, then would take off. Well now after two indoor growing seasons, my coffee plant has more than doubled in size. It’s still only one stalk but the upper leaves are 3 times the size of the lower leaves. So I will continue to be patient for now. Do you ever pinch the top to make it create multiple branches? If yes, do I wait for 3rd growing season (next spring)? Or no, just let it grow it’s own way? Thank you so much for your encouragement and info.
