The Cascades is located in Giles County, Virginia about three miles from the town of Pembrook. The hike is two miles following the Little Stony Creek until you get to the Cascades; a 70 foot waterfall that drops into a little pond. This is a great family hike with picture picture perfect terrain. The elevation gain is around 600 feet but spread out far enough where you barely notice your heading up hill. Before arriving, you can stop at Tangent Outfitters at the beginning of Cascades Rd to stock up on snacks, water, and clothing if needed. After that follow the road till you enter the Jefferson National Forest and the entrance to the Cascades parking lot. Be sure to bring some spare change (I believe $2.00) to legally pay for your parking spot. The lot holds a bathroom and changing area for the swimmers. At the trail head you have two choice, the lower trail and the upper trail. We recommend following the lower because it lays along the creek for a more scenic journey. The upper trial just takes you to the top by following the mountain edge. Both are the same length and almost the same difficulty. To take the lower, just cross the bridge over the creek to your right. On the lower trail you will come across plenty of history. This includes a generator that was used to help the logging community back in the day. Another spot to watch for is Barney's Wall. Look up to your left at times to and you'll notice a large cliff face towering above the area. You can actually get to the top of the cliff by following the Barney's Wall Trail from the upper trail. This will add another 4 miles round-trip, making the trip 8-miles in all. I don't recommend taking children up to this location. If you choose to just travel to the falls you will get to the Cascades. The waterfall is a great place for pictures and if your up for it, swimming. The water is extremely cold, so stay safe. After you've had lunch and decide to go down, head up the large staircase to get to the upper trail and take this down. It is a lot easier going down and a lot quicker.
