Well games usually reuse visual things in order to save on resources like I am pretty sure they reused a ton of animations from 2016 to eternal but here they are talking about function, we've had nothing that functions and feels like the skull crusher. It would probably be like comparing bfg and rocket launcher, they both shoot a slow moving orb of aoe damage but the difference is how it feels and functions.

Between this and Metroid Prime 4, I've got plenty to look forward to next year. Id Software seems to be one of the few developers making consistently high-quality AAA games in the west. I remember my friend showing me DOOM 2016 for the first time, and before playing it, I was so done with first-person shooters. Oversaturated, by-the-numbers experiences nigh indistinguishable from every other game, with campaigns that are a chore to play through on higher difficulties due to unskippable cinematic bullshit, awful framerates on console, hitscan bullets and overly-accurate and powerful enemy AI forcing me into the most safe, boring, tedious playstyle imaginable across the board, and a focus on realism to the detriment of gameplay. So imagine my surprise when my friend hands me the controller and I'm moving across the floor at blistering speeds by default, blasting demons to pieces, doing glory-kills reminiscent of Ninja Gaiden II's executions, all in glorious 60fps even on a base PS4. Stuff to collect throughout the level, a 3D map, some decent platforming (which felt right at home to me, as a Metroid Prime fan), and scenes where Doom Slayer outright sticks a middle finger to the tropes we'd seen in western AAA games at that time in his interractions with Samuel Hayden. It was unapoligetically gamey, and I loved the hell out of it. It was one of the first games I bought when I finally got a PS4 Pro of my own. Since then, I've discovered other FPS games with solid singeplayer campaigns that were actually playtested on higher difficulties, like Halo (not counting 2 or the 343 games), Resistance, Dusk, The Citadel, and Titanfall 2. It's safe to say DOOM 2016 got me back into FPS's, and woke me up to the possibilities of the genre beyond the status quo. Id have been killing it with DOOM since then, especially Eternal and its DLC. I can't wait to see what they do with The Dark Ages. Hugo Martin and his team have the goods. Not so keen on Marty though, after the Mick Gordon situation. Not sure what's been happening lately, because he looks like he's on death's door here.

The whole thing looks like a forced project. Instead of giving us the 3rd Wolfenstein game, we get what looks like a Doom Eternal DLC, with "uuh, aah, what haven't we shown them... A SHIELD THAT THEY CAN THROW LIKE CAP, A SKULLCRUSHER GUN and uhh.. LET THEM OPERATE ONE OF THE DEAD TITAN THINGS".
