That bass has some of the best tones I've ever heard!!!! I'm in the Ken Smith/Stingray camp as far as appealing tone and this bass in right in there as far as my ear is concerned. What amazes me about this bass and the incredible Human BaseX.oc5 is the great passive tone! The low B on both absolutely destroy the theory of the necessity of a 35 inch scale for a decent low B!!! The Delano/Glockenklang combination sounds sooooooo good! As always, Ed's reviews are second to none. If you are not getting some type of compensation from the various manufacturers whose products you demo, you should be.

If you equip this bass with a 3-way-switch, you can get an additional single-coil mode, that sounds phenomenal in my opinion! I tried a lot of basses, but that Roxy B5 is outstanding and by the way strung with Elixir Strings now out of the box, like all Human Base basses do. Great work, Siggi Jäger!

My B5 arrived yesterday! So far all is as I hoped; love the action, balance, and the tone...fantastic range and variety. Stuff goin' on in there that sounds amazing, esp. the active-series mode is way, way cool, unbelievable harmonic content. Truly, Ed just skims the surface of what's possible with this puppy - I'm just getting started and am blown away, in NO way disappointed. Hardware, finish, detail, playability and sound are all high-end but at an outstanding (and negotiable!) price...

BTW, if you take the ACG filter preamp as an example, the high boost is actually a high-pass filter, with a frequency selector, letting pass all frequencies above a preset value, all the way up to the top end of the frequency response of the preamp. It's a top preamp! :)

@bassistxx at 0:38 in the video he says it's brought into the US from "Asia". IIRC, I read in a forum that it's Korea (perhaps Ed can confirm?). But it arrives here "in parts", un-assembled but not as a complete guitar.. The Praxis guys do the final assembly on each as they are ordered, including installing the German electronics. This is one reason why Human Base guitars are quite a bit more expensive in Europe, as they are an import there, despite being German-designed...

@Thuddster - Glad to be of help. I hope it works out for you. It's a very nice bass, however I still recommend trying instruments before you buy. The one thing a reviewer can't do is put it in your hands so you can feel it. Best of luck.

A superb review, Ed - thanks! ..in fact, it was so compelling that I ordered one of these (in natural finish) this very morning. Should be here by early next week. Sweet! It's always risky making an internet buy on something new and rare like the Roxy B5, but this exceptional review gave me exceptional insight into this bass, and the confidence to make that purchase "hands-free". Sort of the ultimate goal of the Reviewers Art, I'd say. WTG Sir!

@@zniscal Alas, I suffered a left-hand injury ~5 years ago, that has severely limited my playing time (it just gets too painful after ten minutes or so) :-( So I'd given this to my nephew to use as a studio mule and in his session work (he plays bass & drums, and runs a recording studio). It has held up incredibly well, sounds as good or better than the day I received it, and he loves it. I picked up a nice case for it at a MF sale so it's been well protected. My only real beef is that the battery life for the active pickup is fairly short, and it's much too easy to leave on accidentally. Its been annoying to pick it up, ready to practice to it to find the battery is flat. Wish it had some sort of power indicator (that you could dim or switch off for stage use), to let you know at a glance. Still, it's a terrific bass, I miss playing it.

Glockenlang preamps goes very high in general, usually above 10 KHz. I don't the exact frequency response, but I would think it has a very wide frequency spread on the highs, to boost lower frequencies (5K, 7K).

@BassGuitarMag - Great point Ed, but these are so hard to find, there is almost no way for me to try one first. A hurdle that I'd imagine pretty much all new-to-the-market instrument makers face; how to get enough out there into players hands, so that other players can try them, like them, and buy their own...building cred and establish themselves in the market. So it's precisely this caliber of detailed review of features and more importantly, demonstrated sound that makes the risk acceptable.

The treble frequency is centered at 18kHz. Yes, it's very high, but that's what the specs say. As far as how I pronounce "detent"... well, I'm from NYC and we talk funny. I was describing the dent in the pot, the center point which they consider flat. I don't remember how I pronounced it, sorry.

Most musicians/technicians know how 18kHz sounds without playing the instrument... but "subjective" is the right word, I guess it suits the taste of some players. By the more "interesting" frequencies I mean the frequencies that have more impact on the tone of a bass (and the human ear :-).

That type of noise is a result of poor shielding, and has nothing to do with the preamp's self-noise. I found the Glock to be quiet, certainly as good as anything on the market. And the bass was properly shielded, so ground hum was not an issue.

Only thing I would add, is that the Glock is somewhat more sensitive to dust issues / crackling if not maintained properly, more than others. Otherwise, great.
