Engineering students at Southampton University designed and constructed a human-powered shredding mill for rice straw. The rice straw has to be shredded for biodigestion (for otherwise it is just burnt, polluting the air), but it is quite a hard material so it needs some power source for shredding. The goal was to use a renewable power source and robust technology for use in remote locations.
