I paddleboarded with my dad and a few friends to a group of islands a half mile off the coast of Okinawa. It was a peaceful, relatively uneventful trip until we stumbled upon several caves filled with human skulls and bones. We found out the bones had already been reported to local police but couldn’t get any information as to their origin. Finding open graves is not that uncommon in Okinawa as grave-making is a fairly unregulated process, and you can find them pretty much anywhere, especially near the sea. This is a public island, so we were not trespassing, and there were no signs to indicate the caves were actually tombs. We were not the first to camp there and it is also a popular fishing spot for locals. All in all a very enjoyable and memorable trip!
