This is actually a great move for street fighting if you know when to use it and when to use it. Plus there are diffrent versions of this technique so you can put your hands in diffrent places. It works ok in no-gi but I find that it works best in gi. But be warned. This technique will get you DQed faster than you can say "prevet" in a tournament. I did this during class once and I got yelled at to never do it in tournament. Glad I was told becasue I was(and still am) going to compete in NAGA.

This move is banned in several BJJ promotions because if the knee buckles instead of that nice takedown (which basically always happens) they end up in a sort of instant calf slicer and shred their knee. It is NOT a practical move and is dangerous even when done correctly.

People are confused on the followup for this. You should immediately follow this move with a heel hook or a heel lock. It's not a "staple" move by any means, just something you keep in a bag of tricks to catch someone off guard.

Small "f" stands for force, probably measured in Newtons. "K.E". for Kinetic Energy. "P.E." for Potential Energy. Thus, f (K.E. + P.E.) on right side of the equation stands for the total force caused by adding the kinetic energy and potential energy values. As for those three small "w" things with dots on top of them, balancing out the general equation on the other side of the equal sign...I think they're referring to Whoopass technique numbers i, ii, and iii. (#'s 1, 2, and 3.)

Most skills in martial arts are never used in real situations.. they are merely learned for traditional, enlightment, and other purposes, such as wanting to perfect the art. And, learning things as difficult as these moves, no matter how impractical, they will almost always enhance the practical moves that you WOULD use in an actual fight.

It's simpler than they make it. Once you land, you slide the leg that you had behind their knee OUT, with your other leg still pressing down their upper body. This allows you to swing yourself around to get a more dominant position. This is simply the takedown, not the position. Hopefully that helps. =]

@matthewtop Not really, the scissor used on him was was a variation on an old advanced judo move, and was going for the heel. Plus, Anderson Silva was pwning his opponent, but was getting tired cause of the rules making it hard to finish him. In RL, Silva would never get taken by such a move most likely since it requires both luck and usually a tired/ inferior opponent. Scissor takedowns are not to be used on skilled opponents unless they are tired. :P

We do the same thing in my dojang for Taekwondo, but it includes a block and grab. But,we don't grab on the dobok (uniform),we simply hold on to their arm,and do the scissors. It's pretty much on how it is demonstrated here. Then, from there you can do an armbar.

@asianboy938 No, most people do not learn Judo to defend themselves. Most people taking any martial art will never be in a fight, including competitions. Any martial art you choose is fine. The way you practice and your reactions and judgement are far more important than what art you choose. None of them require any more commitment than any other. ALL require years of training to use well. It doesn't matter how "easy" an art is, you aren't going to be able to absorb it in a few weeks.
