"I'll get the next best thing", epiphone guitars lately really are next to the best thing

They certainly are. I just got another "cheap" Epiphone LP for a different project and it's amazing quality for the price.

@@TheModScientistTV I've recently got an epiphone les paul standard 60s in iced tea, and for some mad reason I want to change all of the hardware to gold including having a custom engraved truss cover hahah

@@TheModScientistTVguys in my band would love you. They’re huge fans of Tool and they’re always trying to get us to play their songs. Only problem is as a new player (about 7/months) I’m not quite there yet. I just dropped my new Alpine white Epiphone Les Paul at the luthier and the Ebony fretboard with the gold hardware looks amazing. I like Strats also, just got a MIM Fender Player Plus Strat (Olympic Pearl w/tortoise pick guard) and it’s beautiful… the best MIM Strat ever made! Rolled fretboard, locking tuners and Fender noiseless SSS pups. It comes with 9’s but I think 10’s would be a better fit. Great guitar but I think I like the Epiphone Les Paul custom better

Great choice of guitars! I've been a strat player since my teens, my favorite guitar is a 90's MIM red strat with a rosewood fretboard. I'll never ever part with that guitar. But these Les Paul Customs are quickly becoming my number 2 favorite model. And white guitars are very classy.

Modern les Paul require an “F spaced “ bridge pickup . Just measured and installed new pickups in my Gibson .

We are start with an Epiphone, then move on to the Gibson. I like the look of the guitar with one cover missing. It makes it look even more "custom" made.

I considered leaving the cover off, but personally I like the classic look more.

I was so nervous with the hot iron above the unprotected body!
@TheModScientistTV
3 жыл бұрын
There's absolutely no need to, a soldering iron can hardly damage a guitar body and it's much safer in that regard than any other tool. The only thing you need to look out for is the wiring. I've made mistakes and created damage with screwdrivers, drill bits, router bits and even loose components, but I've never hurt a guitar with a soldering iron.

Great video. I’m restoring my Les Paul Studio and have the same set of Seymour Duncan pickups you have. I’m also looking to attach the same covers to them. Could you tell me if they’re both 50 mm covers or just one? Did you also use original Gibson covers or are they made by another company? Thanks.
@TheModScientistTV

I've tried using the original Epiphone covers, but the original bridge pickup was 52 mm, while the Seymour Duncan was 50 mm. So I ended up ordering an aftermarket cover for the bridge. Fortunately the color difference wasn't so big between the old and new cover.

Is there any microphonic without wax ?
@TheModScientistTV

The Seymour Duncan pickups are also wax potted, but not as gunked as the original Epiphone pickups.

When they make the uncovered pickups they wax pot and then apply the tape. When you make a covered one they fill the cover with wax. Like he said they are all potted unless it says so.

Hi, can I use silicone sealant instead of soldering ?
@TheModScientistTV

No, I do recommend solder due to the conductance. Basically you can't mod guitars without soldering, so it's an essential skill to learn. And definitely worth investing time in.

Hey frienddddddd love the video :)))) but i gotta ask? i wanna do the same thing to my Strat, but i can't choose which size to buy. the 52mm cover? or the 50mm cover? can you help me out?
@TheModScientistTV

Strats generally have a 53 mm wide bridge and 52 mm pickups, which are called F-spaced for that reason. The best way to make sure is to measure the distance between the centers of the two outer pole pieces.

HELP!! Can you tell me why it's near impossible to find raw brass pickup covers? 🤔
@TheModScientistTV
3 жыл бұрын
To be honest I've never seen pure brass covers, most of them are chrome or nickel. From what I'm reading brass tends to cut a lot of high end frequencies, so they're not very popular and thus in very short supply.
@naota888
3 жыл бұрын
@@TheModScientistTV I've read that as well. However, I'm surprised there isn't at least one video on here that does a comparison. I've read that some people like them for Jazz, but not one video that mentions raw brass at all. Thank you for the reply!

Brass covers are considered the cheap version. Like the others said, they're not your best option and think about it; what does brass do? Tarnish.
@naota888
3 жыл бұрын
@@jreagle58 That's actually the exact reason why I would prefer brass. For the tarnishing. Chrome and shiny gold parts are considerably ugly, over hyped, and over used in my opinion. I love watching brass and copper develop patina and tarnish. Looks really cool aged and gives a lot of character.

why you did not put wax?

Because it was already wax potted. No need to do it twice.

Can we use super glue instead of soldering?
@TheModScientistTV
3 жыл бұрын
I don't recommend it, since it's a metal on metal adhesion. The solder is conductive, the glue is not. Besides that the surfaces don't have enough contact for glue to hold and the bond won't be strong enough.
@jreagle58
3 жыл бұрын
Super glue is definitely not an option but what if you have leftover copper shielding tape? I suppose the same applies that there's not enough surface to secure it.
@TheModScientistTV
3 жыл бұрын
With shielding tape you don't have a rigid contact between the base plate and the cover. I honestly don't think there's an alternative to soldering, it's an essential skill for guitar modding.

@@TheModScientistTV thanks for the advice. It's not that I have reservations about soldering. Just looking for a short cut. I'll solder it.
