It has been a remarkable month of humpback whale sightings off the coast of Dana Point in Southern California. With over 70 encounters and counting so far, October 2022 is our second-best October ever for humpback sightings.
Surface behaviors like repeatedly slapping its tail on the water can be for a variety of reasons including non-verbal communication, stunning prey, or defense against natural predators.
Humpbacks reach lengths of up to about 60 feet. They are seen intermittently throughout the year on Dana Point whale watching trips. Entanglement in fishing gear continues to be one of the largest threats to these whales.
