Indian almond leaves (also known as Catappa leaves). These leaves of the Terminalia catappa tree are especially popular in the betta and shrimp hobby as a natural medicine and water conditioner. They are said to help combat fungus and bacterial problems like finrot, and prevent stress by mimicking the natural habitat. When placed in an aquarium, Indian almond leaves slowly start to decompose. While this happens they turn the water a yellow or brown color by releasing tannins. These tannins lower the pH and are said to have antifungal and antibacterial properties, which comes in very handy when you have a fish suffering from finrot or when you’re raising vulnerable fry. The dark color of the water is considered unsightly by some aquarists, but it actually mimics the natural habitat of many fish species! You can tear the leaves up if you want the tannins to release more quickly. Shrimp will actually appreciate it if you don’t remove the leaves, as they feed on the decomposing remains. Fish that benefit from Indian almond leaves include: Angelfish, Barbs, Betta, Cory catfish, Discus, Gouramis, Killifish, Platies, Rasboras, Tetra, etc. www.aquariadise.com/indian-almond-leaves/ fishlab.com/indian-almond-leaves/

In nature, the bottom dirt, sand, and rocks harbor bacteria that also filters ammonia into nitrate, and the plants only absorb nitrates. I don't think plants do much to remove ammonia...….

Hi Dexter, am a beginner in fish keeping,.... I bought 8 white mollies and 8 black mollies and kept in a 300-liter wooden tank. but the problem is white mollies keep on dying and I now have only 4 white mollies remained. They just start by strange swimming pattern (on their side and then in circles) then they die after a day or two. I feed them mosquito larvae and flake food and I change and condition 70% my water after every four days. This problem seems to affect only white mollies but not black mollies. Can you please advice on what might be the problem with my fish and the better way to keep them?

Mollies once contaminated with desease are difficult to cure. My motto in fish keeping is prevention is better than cure. To prevent mollies from getting sick is actually the things that you do. May i just add that be careful with mosquito larvae or any other live food. Wash them as they might be the carrier of bacteria. Second, practice the habbit of quarantine. Its a big NO to just immediately add new fish to your tank. New fish should undergo quarantine. Meaning you separate them in another tank and treat them with medecine. Methelin blue is good. Third, if you are giving live food just give a small amount. Dont over feed. imagine your fish belly is too small that you cant afford to allow them to suffer indigestion. If at an early stage you detect some sick fish separate that in another tank immediately for treatment.
