I’m Fairly certain that boat repair labor is at about $130 per hour these days. Then you calculate in that 90% of those boats will need to be completely re-wired. After sitting in the water for weeks you’re going to have some delaminating down the road. Insurance adjusters know all of this and they know the repair bill isn’t worth the outcome. There’s a hell of a lot more wrong with those boats than meets the eye. Anyone not knowing this going into buying one of those boats is making a big mistake. For the person that can carry out all the repairs on their own, some of those boats could be a good deal.

Non coastal people see many too good to be true deals in the Trader or on E bay shortly after Hurricanes. I used to work at a mid west boat dealer and we would get calls about a deal they found in Florida and wanted to know if it was a good enough deal to buy it sight unseen. My response was always "you know they just had a hurricane in that area, right"? Sometimes the customer would buy it and bring it into us for repairs just to find out all electrical wiring was corroded from one end to the other inside the insulation and where there was electrical current the wire and device would be eaten away by electrolysis. It only takes a few hours of submersion for electrolysis to do it's evil and it doesn't matter if it is salt or fresh water.

@@kingfish4918 do you mean disconnect the batteries? Definitely will help with electrolisis.. That is the damage itself ! The good part is that 80 % of a boat is plastic but every metal in contact with an electric flow will get heavy corroded.
@dviolinman
Жыл бұрын
The biggest take away is not the damage you can see but the insurability of these boats over long term life, it's not what you can see that make them uninsurable, it's what you can't see, would you insure these boats after being "sunk" think about that, To be reinsured it needs to be a documented full restoration "Refit" to get a new insurance policy, there in lies the rub.

I am in the boat hauling biz and know what these boats are worth and take the 30 Grady that boat is 280 to 320 even if you had to rewire and electronics that is only 85k and if you got for say 30 your into it for 125 140 the most and you can still sell it for new value because boats don’t have salvage titles I have 3 clients that is all they do is buy salvaged boats and fix them up and resell them they have bought 140 boats so far between the 3 of them

I think some of the reason such clean boats get totaled, is just because of the location. Right after a hurricane goes through prices for anything boat related go through the roof. From haul out to repair to shipping to even just storage in a boat yard prices are big. Insurance companies have to pay for storage and repairs under outrageous conditions so in a sense it's cheaper for them to just total the boat and write off the loss. than to pay for months of storage until it can get repaired.

They get power from a package that was unbelievable years ago. With a 600, soon to be 750 in my opinion once they force feed it that leaves so much more room in your boat that used to be dedicated to motors. The technology Mercury has changed and invented over the years has truly changed the world. That's in way more categories than just boating. They are the unsung Tesla of internal combustion engines.

The boats a totaled because they were either sunk or swamped. Every boat in our community marina was a total loss. Some sunk some end up iin mangroves and some yet to be found. It’s easy to overlook the damage that the hurricane force waves and blown saltwater can do to a boat that doesn’t appear damaged. Our 2 year old Beneteau GT 32 has been sitting in copar for 4 months, with a flooded cabin, electric exposed to salt water. Engines are fine, Progressive said 50k to fix even though the entire cabin and electric needs to be replaced. No marina is willing to fix it, now progressive says they are getting an estimate. 5 weeks later and they still have no estimate. We got an estimate of 350k, but marina said they would not repair it due to cost to repair and unexpected issues while repairing. I’m not sure there is a rhyme or reason to when they are totaling boats.

I'm assuming some of the cleaner boats that don't look sunk, probably ended up just up in someone's yard or in the mangroves after the surge went down and just " gently " came to rest. Then when salvaged it could've been cheaper for the insurance to write off the boat. Or owners turned ownership over to salvage companies.....

I'm guessing the insurance companies would rather cut their losses and call a boat totalled, instead of going for extensive repairs (inner workings of the boat like wiring etc are prolly also in need of replacing, and who knows how many hidden weak spots got created), and then running the risk of the boat breaking down again later. which can be linked back to this original damage, so the insurance company has to spend more money to fix it. So that would be my best bet, rather than risking that they have to do multiple payouts to the boat owners cause of hidden damages that can be traced back to this hurricane's damage, they want to do 1 payout to the owners, and hope the boat is still worth something on auction. with a "better safe than sorry"/"cut your losses" mentality?

no salvage laws as people commonly and wrongly believe it. The short of it, firstly ownership doesn't change if you salvage it, if your boat is sunk and I go salvage with without permission its still legally yours. I can request a reasonable amount to cover my time and costs from you but, but if you refuse I have to goto specialty maritime court where its determined. There are rules like if I save a commercial cargo vessel that would otherwise be lost I can be entitled to a payment equivalent to 1/3 of commercial cargo If you could just claim ownership of a vessel that floating you could go cut the mooring lines and OH Look its floating unmanned its mine now

At the end of your first segment you go by a large boat and then there is a small boat next to it, that has a Honda motor, center console maybe 10-12 feet long. Do you know what the name brand of that boat? Never seen one of those. Wonder what it sold for. May ask the Cooper people about it even though it looks like it is sold. Great video, always wonder where the boats were.

How do these boats get totaled by the insurance company. Simple the insurance adjuster makes ten or twenty thousand dollars that he or she pockets to put the claim in, enough claims the adjuster retires

Those things still bring revenue for the Tax Man. All of these should be 5000 or less. Give the poor man a chance to own a 300k boat. Why spend 100k at auction and then another 100k to fix?
