Because that's how it was way back in the days when these Folk Tales were created. You were either poor or royal. There really was no inbetween. Even the ones who were getting by with their hard work and labor were poor. Besides, the stories would not be as good if people's lives were already good. Also this story in particular was about "Humility" and empathy. Although I like the "King Grizzle Beard" version of the tale much better.

Get over yourself. Giving a prideful goit a significant but not excessive lesson in humility and suffering is a tremendous gift. I remember a couple of girls had asked a priest how they might grow in holiness. He told them that they could not say anything negative for the span of a week. After two days they begged him to free them of that penance. A day of living like a peasant, being forced to do work with no appreciation, and even with the prospect of being jailed unjustly, for only a day or two, can help someone get perspective.

@@HolyKhaaaaan interesting perspective but we didn't even learn enough about the princess to judge her, they're wasn't even a specific reason why she was laughing for all we know she probably found it funny being confessed to by people she didn't even know Either way she might have already been a good person, afterall she stuck to her word and married the beggar. The only complaint being seen through her tears, If the point of his plan was to make her less spoiled why not just let her live her life as a beggar than i don't know... toying with her life, playing cruel jokes on her and getting her arrested, dude I'd understand if it were a higher being or something, but this another human being who supposedly likes her?? @@HolyKhaaaaan Once the prince crossed his limits by framing her as a thief and throwing her in a dungeon, it is no longer about the princess gaining a proper perception. It's just the prince showing his own ugliness and that he only wanted revenge. *Neither the princess had the proper manners nor he prince knew to punish her with righteousness.* EDIT: Considering that the princess stayed with him all because she is a keeper of her words, this shows how the princess already was a good hearted person, she just lacked manners. Talsong Kingslayer It's a story about Humility. Sometimes the only way to make someone humble is to bring them down to the lowest point. However, the "King Grizzle Beard" version of the story is much better at expressing this. In fact many of these Folk Tales are rather "incomplete". I saw two of them that are essentially the same story, but different artstyles and slightly more details in different areas.
@RikkuTakanashi

Yeah, she was merely teasing the men and turning their advances away. And clearly more kept coming so she wasn't hurting their delicate sensibilities. Yet, he made her live as a poor woman for who knows how long, go from the best diet a person could have in that day and age to a poor man's diet, (that can't have been easy on her health,) and made her work like a common laborer when she'd likely never done as hard work in her life, then berated her cruelly for her floundering. And to top it all of he mock framed her and likely made her fear for her life. Stealing from royalty at best could earn one brutal lashings and at worse, death. And lets not even get into the fact that he snuck into her BED CHAMBERS to find out what her shoes were made of! That alone puts his morality into question. Especially back in those days. It's really a miracle she didn't end up bitter towards him. Plus, nobody said she treated the poor any worse then he was, yet she was "humbled" for laughing at other royalty? People who themselves clearly weren't humble either.

Also, I don't care what the culture is like, a poor man should not have authority over a full blooded princess. Forcing her to live as a poor woman, shaming her, etc was like slapping her kingdom in the face! And I think we've found one of the weaknesses of Modern Western civilization here. There is a difference between making jokes about people and making jokes about everyone. A difference between caring about others and not caring. This woman initially did not care about anyone, for she let everything that the men said to her pass through one ear and out the other. Rather than listening to them, she thought them all ridiculous. She was smug. Smug self-satisfaction is not only annoying and wholly unattractive. But it can lead to some really bad character flaws. Prides takes a relatively small and harmless character flaw and feeds it and turns it into something grotesque, and prideful people can end up wearing their flaws as badges of pride. Sort of like making a pair of shoes out of a pair of gigantic fleas you've got. That prince, who took an interest in her more than the rest, exposed this prideful princess' character flaw. Then he made it clear: you're not better than anyone else. You're not above everyone else. You can suck at life just like everyone else. And, yes, you can be miserable like everyone else, even if it's not your fault. That is an important lesson she. Had. Not. Learned. But still more important than that lesson is that just because you are a miserable human being does not mean you cannot be loved and that you cannot have a joyful life. In short, the point of the story was that flaws are flaws, and they do make you a miserable person. But that does not make you unworthy of love, and in fact the most loving person is the person who makes that clear to you, and yet loves you anyway.

I see a lot of comments here saying how the prince went too far and that the girl is a poor victim for only having laughed at him and others. But I think what a lot of people here need to realize is that WORDS HURT. That's why verbal abuse is a thing that is taken seriously as it should be. Nobody wants to feel like human trash when someone insults them, yet there are many people that are VERY keen on taking the role of being that person who delivers it. It doesn't matter who you are; gender, skin color, nationality, etc. Etc., we can all agree on the same thing: WORDS HURT. That's why derogatory slurs of any kind are EXTREMELY taboo - because while they just might be words, it doesn't change the fact that it fucks you up from the deep inside. What the princess felt what a physical manifestation of what she makes other people feel on the inside: trapped and worthless. So maybe reconsider the way you look at this folk tale.

Why is everyone so offended by this story? I think this was the only way in which she'd learn her lesson. If he just laughed at her as she had done to him, she'd just laugh back and nothing would be learned. She had to suffer something that'd remain with her as a lesson. Even then, the story said that the bars had BARELY closed before he came and returned her to her former glory. Either way, it's just a story.

I think the people condemning the prince for 'being cruel' are missing the point of the story. The princess had an ego and treated all she met with a holier-than-thou-art attitude, laughing in their faces when they treat her with respect. Her irreverent attitude does her no credit and only earns her disdain from her subjects. This is a lesson for those of high rank to act with grace and humility towards all as you are setting an example to the people and sowing the seeds of contempt will only lead to trouble and potential political unrest. P.S. - Also, whatcha wanna bet that if the roles were reversed there'd not be a peep?

@@bennu547 Glad to know that there are some sane people still left lol. But yeah, the problem is people are looking at this story through a modern perspective and not understanding how it might have been an important lesson of the time; especially if you were a noble.

But the prince overreacted in a BIG way. Basically abused and humiliated her for her attitude. It didnt show her anything new, just how vengeful he can be. And also her actions were true. She did marry as she promised, even if the person with the answer turned out to be a beggar, she kept her word. He on the other hand cheated to get the information. So in the end who was truly high on ego and holier-than-thou-art? I say, it was the stuck up prince.

@@olympiaelda1121 You're entitled to your opinion. However, I would argue that you're looking at the story from a different perspective. Not wrong, per se, but just not examining the bigger picture. Stories like this are meant to teach important life lessons on the small scale so almost anyone could understand the message. And the message is clear; 'You reap what you sow.' Granted, if this were retold in a modern setting with modern sensibilities taken into account, you might wind up with something less problematic. But holding these folk tales, that are clearly products of an era that is long gone (Centuries long gone), to modern standards of morality is fruitless and asinine. If I might suggest, why not try adapting it yourself into something you feel would update it to modern standards of morality? One of my favorite authors that did just that is Angela Carter who took classic well known fairytales and rewrote them with a feminist viewpoint and added back eroticism that was lost when people like the Brothers Grimm censored it and Christianized them. That's kind of the beauty of fairytales. They're very adaptable and can be reworked, updated, and retold; serving as an insightful time capsule of societal beliefs and attitudes throughout human history.

Are we sure the Queen didn't plotted to kill the King for ruining her life that way? And is this story about the "Princess' Shoes" or about the difficulties she had with her husband?
