The fact they recognize each other just by the style of play says a lot about how dedicated top players are to the game. Back when both of them played they studied each other's patterns to no end for an eventual advantage in case they fought in bracket, and it wasn't just PPMD studying Hbox and vice versa, they probably did that for every other top player at the time. I wonder if the pressure of the old "God" title gets to PP and makes him experience imposter syndrome when he plays top players. People were banking on his return for years and I've wondered ever since his return if maybe he's been afraid of letting people down by being 'exposed' as a disappointment. In reality, everyone thinks he's cool and just wishes he would take it easy, have fun, and try his best.

PPMD ended that years at 6th (this was the year Leffen ranked 3rd, so it was the first time that the top 5 wasn't all 5 gods). PP has said many times that he believes his health work will help much more than playing top players and that it’s fine if you don’t understand that. I can understand him after seeing him play other top players specifically when he ran into salt on ranked. He would be aware and point out specific situations he kept losing to but he expressed that he couldn’t physically react or deal with it at his current state. Playing with other top players and constantly being reminded that you can’t physically play as well as you used to and you COULD’VE beaten that situation would just be torture. Good for him taking one game and leaving.

Everyones assuming pp left because hes scared of hurting his ego or of what others think of him, which is certainly possible, but think its likely he got stressed by competition and doesnt really want to dip back into it for mental health reasons And there could be loads of other reasons too, i just don't really like people assuming things of other peoples mental state and the reasons why they do things, especially when some people are making such a big deal over it. Similar to how pps very vague about his health issues and people say "oh if they actually mattered he couldve come back already its been 10 years" like chill youre not a doctor, maybe his health issues are a big deal amd deserve him taking it slow. And yet these people are valid for pps been expressing a will to return to competition for ages and a lack of detail will make people assume, i just dont think i like the situation as a whole

I mean out of Mew2King, Armada and PPMD, he's the most likely to come out of retirement and keep up with everyone else competitively. Mew2King is doing great things with coaching, and Armada streams but he isn't keeping up with the game at all. I don't see why Mew2King would want to return and how Armada could make up for his enormously long absence from the game as a whole. PPMD on the other hand is very active in the community and desiring, at least somewhat, to return. Now, of course it is incredibly stressful and he doesn't want to devote himself to the game anymore to the level that he did before, but let's not get too cynical.

@@sticlavoda5632it’s time to give up on that dream man, sorry to say. I love PP too. But after ten years, he’s a lot older now, the competition is extremely fierce. If he couldn’t figure out the health issues for ten years, what’s gonna change? We all have anxiety and depression. Most of us have physical health problems too, that’s what being an adult human is like. I’m in pain 24/7 and have been for a decade as well. But at a certain point I stopped using it as an excuse and just got the fuck on with my life, gritting my teeth and getting through it. Either he’s going to do it or he’s not, waiting around for his health to magically change is only hurting him. He needs to let go of the “I’m damaged” shit and just live his life if he wants to be happy. And I’m saying that in regards to life, not playing melee. I don’t even think he should try to compete. Lots of us have serious health issues, we can’t let it stop us from living life. Constantly telling yourself “I can’t because of my disease” or “why am I cursed, I’ll never have a normal life” is just training your subconscious to believe that you can’t do it.

I really respect PPMD's discipline with Melee, it's really hard to say "How I interact with this game isn't good for me and what is sustainable for me" and to make change on that. His decision is one that is very personal and unique to him, he clearly loves the game overall, but how he engaged with it needed to change for him, and to not only recognize that but also actually implement it is admirable. He is always exposed to top play in Melee, with analysis vids, running into top players online, watching tournaments, etc. he is always there just like before. And despite the highs competing brought him in the past when he played at his top level, and the temptation of going back to competing "just for fun" or "one last tournament" being always present by well-intentioned fans, PPMD always respectfully declines and holds true to his decision that the way he interacted with Melee before is not how he wants to do it now. It's easy to stop when you hate something, it's easy to stop when you hate something AND isn't healthy for you, but it's damn hard to stop when you love something and it isn't healthy, because that's addiction. Mad respect to PPMD for not only his incredible play and tenure with Melee, but also to recognize when it wasn't right anymore and to shift into a way to engage with Melee that is better for him overall.

Hey man, I saw this comment after I responded to your other one. There is definitely quite a bit of immaturity in the community and that's something that I try my best to encourage others to work on. I feel the twitter atmosphere has played a big role in keeping people from having normal mature conversations, but that isn't an excuse. As a community we have plenty of room to improve and we're plenty capable of it. This isn't a dig or an insult, just trying to be constructive. I don't think that the way you phrased this comment isn't going to do much good as far as getting people to be more mature. I understand where you're coming from though and I agree with the sentiment, it's pretty infuriating seeing people be childish and combative. There are plenty of people like that and it really makes communicating with them difficult. But man it's almost cathartic digging deeper with some of these people to see how they came to believe some wild things or why they're trying to fight. Once you break down those barriers, oftentimes it's a misunderstanding, miscommunication, unsubstantiated rumors they heard, or simply something else in their life had them angry already. Edit: to clarify, I'm no saint. I've snapped back at people and I constantly want to tell people they have horrendously sh1t takes all the time. But man do I regret that urge. All that said, similarly to PPMD there is no obligation here. I'm not telling you to be everyone's therapist or trying to pressure you into having frustrating conversations. I'm kinda just lightly encouraging you to at least not add to the anger soup that people are drinking. Either way man, I'm with you on hoping it gets better. I just want to watch people play a game where Mario fights Pikachu

I think it’s cool that they can remember each other’s playstyles. Once a god always a god I guess.

Without the crowds and announcers.. if you unfocus your vision and zone out just right.. it looks and sounds like a casual match. Dreamlike childhood memory vibes.

Geez PP’s chat seemed so mean to HBox. PP was just like talking about how good his DI was, playing his best, and chat was like “call him and scream and leave” “I’ve never been so excited to see you win”. Like geez calm down

Impressed Hbox figured out it was pp, the inverse isn't near as hard to figure out since it's an elite green headband puff with a very distinct playstyle, like there's no one it could be BESIDES Hbox. Meanwhile, a more common main like Falco or Fox is MUCH harder to ID (unless it's M2K), but even then, pp's signature neutral game was enough of a tell for Hbox to notice.

Hate when this happens in any sort of game, I start getting a little bored and play casually laying back until I realize my opponent is pretty good so I start trying more but it’s already too late as I’m in a deficit and then they just one and done. Pretty annoying.

What Hbox said at the end is so real. I LOVE Melee, it's one of my favorite games of all time. But god damn. I would NEVER try to be a top Melee player. In terms of work needed, this is by far the closest an Esport comes to traditional pro sports. You need to straight up dedicate your entire life if you want to be great.
