For me the mistake was simply all by Smith for worrying about trying to risk a crash in a heat race over his teammate when it was meaningless if your focus is on the overall Championship.... if the main concern is to win a Championship then the priority is make it safely into the main event... Deegan raced him hard but Smith took him self out in the end. Smith tried the inside and Deegan closed the door which created the crash. Smith could have been the more mature rider and decided it was just a heat race and settled for second but he went for it and paid the price. He then botched the LCQ by stalling then botched the last corner going for the transfer. I really thought he would have checked up sooner in the last corner and cut under to push the other rider wide not try go around the outside that was asking to be put into the tuff blocks. Was a good night of racing tho that's what we pay to see.

As a racer who began in the eighties, I can speak to the action on the track. What most people don't know is when these guys were banging bars, it wasn't just for fun. For many of the riders, a single position often meant earning enough money just to make it to the next round. However, riders these days are more than happy to get a clean start and then circulate to the checkers. The days of riders literally smashing into each other with the intention of inflicting bodily harm are gone because everyone gets the vast majority of their money paid up front instead of by position. If a seventeen year old Bob Hannah was on the starting line these days, he would absolutely own the field. Hell, half the riders would make a conscious effort NOT to start next to him, fearing their legs may get broken during the holeshot. Back then, men WERE men, and if you weren't willing to potentially put your neck on the chopping block, you'd be in the stands watching the action instead of being in it.

I watched this race and was frustrated with RC's comments when the Yamaha boys were in the throws. Later, RC recanted somewhat, citing that Deegan put the heat race debacle behind him and got on the podium while his teammate crashed three times and did not make the main event. Haiden's "rookiness" shows more in the press conference than on the track. HL demonstrated how a professional athlete answers tough questions while being a good role model and standing up for the truth. I agree that all riders must stand up to the press when silly questions start rolling in. "Like you said, Wyatt, we're brothers. Gotta back your brother's play." (Tombstone, 1993) Also, is Haiden expected to ride around the track and let himself get beat up in every corner just because a veteran may want to pass him? I think of all the incidences Barcia is involved in, not to mention Vince Friese. I am all for aggressive racing, including clean block passes, but what JS did seemed quite petulant.
