I bought my Panhead in 1983, at the time I was 20 and I owned a 66XLCH, my first Harley, at 61 220. I wanted a bigger bike. I bought my pan from somebody that a friend new for $2700 since then I have spent over 50 grand I have rebuilt or more times than I can count from the ground up, currently I am 58 and I still on the same pan, I just never got on board with the factory stock Panhead even though they’re worth so much more than my bike. Currently I took off an aluminum Phat cats gas tank that I ran for years, and had greg at Harrison fabrications in buzzards bait mass welds hidden mounds on my Jesse James dillon tank, so as she sits now she is a 63 pan in a 48 frame with a 65 inner primary so I have put an electric start in her since I have been kicking it since I was 20 and my knee now and ankle are a believer rated, the bike is 93 cubic inch sidewinder kit from S&S, (Best shit ever), and thanks to Hans at American engineering in wareham mass she boasts 99 horse and 105 foot pounds of torque, with the goal they paying us on big old risers

@jetegtmeier71

@@HuntingHarleys it wasn't a 1974 harley, it was a harley 74 ci.in. i can only assume it was in the '50s when my dad bought it new and was in the army. not sure if "Electra" is right I do remember it had a suicide clutch and left hand spark retarder. he would tell me how after it warmed up he could use the spark retarder to all but stall the engine where it would sit there pop pop pop barley running almost jumping off the ground. Also if you didn't have it set right and tried to kick it over it would sent you over the handel bars :). P.S. I understand the retarder was to assist in starting ?
@HuntingHarleys
2 жыл бұрын
74 inch was the standard size of all HD big twins 1954 to 1978. Mid 78 80 cubic inches were additionally offered finally becoming 80 inch only in 1982. The 74 inch was introduced in 1941 and made concurrently with the 61 inch through 1953. Don't retard the spark properly when kicking over the machine they could, and did, break ankles and knees. Not just over the handlebar launching.

@@HuntingHarleys ok cause dad always called it a "harley 74 with suicide clutch"he had many stories, on of which he was in basic at fort knox and put new plugs in it to make it run better, on the way out of town, twisted the throttle back, last time he checked the speedo it was marching past 120 mph and he let off when he couldn't feel the road through that hard tail anymore LOL. of course after he was discharged, fell on hard times and had to sell it :( It had to be the 50's. My sister was born in 59 and it was before they had any children. Are you from Iowa? I see Davenport in the description. I'm in waterloo :)

They were cheap because everyone wanted a shovel. They were cobbling them together from stuff outta junk yards since thats all they could afford. My mother knew a lot of bikers . So I did too. Guys that built their sleds and wrenched on them on their own. None of this factory ride crap. LOL!

You have a Harley that was built with pure iron and pure aluminum. They don’t build them like that anymore. Just check that nuts and screws are always tight , especially the oil and transmission covers. The vibration of the engine loses them. I put some silicone on the screws.
