Let me clarify, I will never go hunting with the goal of finding animals at extended ranges. There are just too many variables that are completely out of your control. Ethical harvesting is number one priority, much respect Piet. When I hunt here in Michigan with my 300 win mag I don’t take shots past 300. Even though me and my friend practice at 6-800 yards no problem here at the ranches. Too much to go wrong at extended ranges and I believe the animals deserve more respect and an instant painless death.

I couldn't agree with you more. I also feel that the animal deserves more respect. They're not "targets". Having the ability to shoot distance is for enjoyment and to tax ones self. Shooting at animals at great distance removes "the hunt".

What is a too far of an ethical shot to one person may not be for another. If a person can make extremely high percentage hits at 800 yards, just as high a hit percentage as another person can do at 300, then there is no difference, right? If one lives and breathes ballistics and puts it to use on a regular basis, then hitting with high confidence at further distances, then the sky is the limit as long as the shot can be reproduced with high certainty. I hope since us hunters should be on the same side of thought then this scenario is accepted.

I still think its unethical shots. Yes, It can go well. But the head is the most mobile part of an animal, and no matter how good of a shot you are there are infinite things that can go wrong, wind, animal moving/scared, error in shooting, weapon or bullet etc etc etc. It all takes a couple cm and you have a animal without bottom cheek starving to death, or a blown of mule.. Why not just take normal vital area shot? Its not like they can go anywhere.

Your commitment to ethical hunting is evident taking into account your obvious fitness and skill. I’ve always tried to limit the risk of wounding an animal by setting rules and parameters for myself. Long range shooting is great fun when making holes in paper though. I commend your commitment to ethical hunting by shooting at realistic distances where external factors like wind and mirage are manageable, and having equipment that is so accurate that a out of sync heartbeat gets forgiven. Your endeavours bring back wonderfull memories now that we are living in Western Australia.

I don’t personally agree with this just because there is very little room for error and idc how good someone is at shooting, is it good when you hit, sure but if you miss then it is bad because you could just shoot there eye or blow a hole through the side of there face or their nose, a good double lung is I don’t want to say more ethical because obviously when you hit the shot they are dead but with the error aspect I think a good ole double lung is better, but just my opinion

By long range I’m talking at or around 500 yards (I’m in the Midwest, it’s hard to find places with more distance than that). The rifle I’m using is a Remington 700 chambered for 300wm. Enjoyed the video. My thoughts on your comment that 'long range hunting is unethical'. Let's start by what is long range hunting. To me there is no such term. Yes there are videos here youtube that are titled long range hunting, but to me it's all hunting. 200 yards may be a long hunting shot to some, 1000 yards may be to others. When I think of hunting with a rifle, I think of capapability. Capability of me as the shooter, capability of my rifle, capability of my ammunition and capability to read wind, proper form etc. Being disabled this gives me much more opportunity to harvest game if I can make shots within the capabilities listed above. So the term 'ethical' is defined as 'relating to moral principles' and 'conforming to accepted standards of conduct'. And the definitions can be broken down further. But the idea is to know that your can make a shot with high confidence and that your equipment is capable for that particular shot. In your video you did some holdovers and held for wind for that particular distance and wind, aiming at a brain that the hit probably needed to be within 1 MOA due to the size of the brain. Some may consider that unethical because of varying winds and the distance of the shot. But that comes down to the capabilities I listed above, not directly related to so-called 'long range hunting'. A 2" brain in the wind at 200m or a 15" lung at 800m. And yes, I'll acknowledge again, I understand what you're getting at, to intentionality go out to make a video shooting at long distance in a hunting situation. But to the rest of us it's capability hunting. So we use our ability to hunt, whatever distance it may be, per our capabilities. I don't intentionally ever set out to shoot at long distances unless it's at a target, that's practicing and honing my capability. So to me there is no term long range hunting, it's defined by capability that you can be reasonably sure with a high percentage that you will be successful. Also, here in New Mexico, driving/herding animals is illegal. It's considered unethical and puts undue stress on the animal.
@IMPACTSHOOTING

@elkbow
4 жыл бұрын
@@IMPACTSHOOTING name here is Dave, I do use elkbow on some forums. I know what you were getting at, those that go out and just make videos shooting animals at long range. If I'm deer hunting and a deer I want shows at 50 meters and I'm using my 300 PRC, boom. If it's at 700 meters and I have a good rest, know the wind, etc, boom. BTW, my comment about herding animals is just related to here in New Mexico. The issue here is where outfitters will herd animals on public hunting land, interfering with others that are hunting. Maybe a future video of yours is just too talk about hunting, how precision shooting and practice makes you a better hunter. Then get in to the discussion about ling range hunting or what hunting is to you in general, discussing capability is the shooter, the gun, the ammunition, wind, shooting terrain, etc. Best wishes.

Awhile ago I had a varmint problem at the ranch, too many squirrel holes around my barn foundation. I was really, really good at squirrel control. Then oneday I spotted one 90 plus yards away, I took a head shot with my cz455, (22rimfire) and splat! It flipped over, upon walking up to it, I saw blood everywhere and no squirrel, suddenly outta nowhere he pops up with a hanging bloody jaw and ran back into his hole! Fuck! I felt like shit, just being off 1/2” inch screwed up my thinking about my confidence in dialing in the scope and perhaps the accuracy of eley match ammo and wind, as he said too many factors can affect your shot placement, I hate the damage these varmints do, but I hate imagining the suffering of starvation and pain that squirrel musta gone through. Since then I upgraded to a 223 match kelbly rifle. Just my point of view, make sure your wind call and scope adjustment is spot on better squeezing that trigger...

Everyone has their own opinions for long range hunting. I shoot out to 600yards and will take coyotes out to 600yards. Deer hunting right now 300yards is max for my 6.5cm though I know I can take it out to 500yards easily. My next rifle is a .300wsm that will be my long range hunting rifle for out to 600yards though I’ll be practicing out to 1000yards. Personally preference great video ready for the next one. People also have issues with head shots. I’ve not taken one on a deer yet I just prefer heart shots with the occasional lung shot. But that’s based on a individuals skill. I can take a head shot I do it on coyotes often.
@grumpygramps9707
4 жыл бұрын
I’ll save you a ton of head ache. I shoot 300wsm with 200 gr game kings. It’s a tough round to load for with heavier billets. A 300 win mag will do long range WAY easier. give better velocity , cheaper and easier on brass. You have to max out a 300wsm to come close to the 300 win mag. Unless you build a 300wsm on a long action which defeats the purpose of a short action. A 300 win mag or 7mm mag will be a better choice. Good luck. Cheers

No bag limit on Springbucks? How much meat does one yield? Looks like 40-60lbs per animal. Must have really filled the freezer.

Not on hunting on land like this. 3 of mine was for family and friends. Typically around 20-25kgs before they are broken down.

How do you make sure they don't move their head? There is still several tenths of a second between the shot and impact.

Yeah, accidentally shooting them in the jaw, not really an ethical shot

I would not have taken the shot on the last springbuck. I feel the other buck is too close behind it. If the projectile makes it through, you might need tracking skills

I agree, watching it back in editing I realized the same thing. So we learn and strive to improve each time we go out
