correct. the 1985 had a different front light, first easily seen thing, then the warning he pointed out were not part the plastics until 1986 or if you had to order a replacement plastic for you 1985. there are a few other changes however this bike in this video is not a 1985 model. maybe sold in 1985 between september- december.

You definitely have a 1985 here. The 86 was the last year and the engine was black not like the grey 85. They produced an 87 model but none got out of factory or not that we know of but a lot of engine parts sold after 86 were stamped with the 87 part number. The 87 was a generation 4 250R and had engine and suspension upgrades. Before covid a crate 86 ATC250R near me sold for $21,000 and it has changed hands 3 times that I k ow if then sold on E bay but not sure what it brought. I believe there are 3 that show up from time to time and a few 89 TRX 250R’s still in crates floating around the Midwest but never heard of one selling.

Wheelers were fun in the wintertime. I worked at a dealership then and seemed like EVERYONE had one. They also were the beginning of ruining our local motocross tracks, 3 balloon tires altered the ruts&berms, 4-wheelers even worse with hump left between tires. Diane Feinstein and her Dem chronies put a stop to those 3-wheelers though, and the manufacturers responded with throwing another wheel on the front. The damage was done though. IMO we never sold as many Quads as we did 3-wheelers. And yes the first time I rode one I stuck my leg out into a corner and ran over it😂

The 1986 was and still is the most desirable. It’s the last year, they didn’t release as many, and there were a couple differences not found on the 1985. 1986 was also the year that Honda made both the quad and trike 250R, and with the explosion in the quad market they just didn’t sell as many of the 1986 model. That one there that you’re sitting in is a 1986 I believe, one of the giveaways was the fork clamps and engine color. Also, the thumb throttle works better for quads and trikes because it’s hard to twist the throttle when you’re hanging off the side of the machine, which is the proper way to corner them. Making a left hand turn your but is shifted off the seat and you’re hanging off the left side of the machine. That means your right arm is stretched out just to hold onto the grip, and that is what makes it harder to twist a throttle. It can be done, and the Kawasaki came stock with a twist throttle, but it’s not ideal for most trail riders. MX and and dune riders didn’t mind a twist throttle, and the Kawasaki was specifically designed for motocross and dune riding which is why it was equipped with a twist throttle. Having the thumb throttle suited most riders because the vast majority of riders would buy them and ride them in the woods, and their machines never even saw a race track at all. Overall it was a cool video topic, I’d love to see more trike and quad videos because I’m not much of a dirt bike guy.

The front brake disk shows evidence of being burnished in which requires the vehicle to be started and run, either on a Dyno or on the ground, at a relatively fast speed. This would indicate that it has been started at least once and driven.

@@gorgesswg nope, dealers were still able to sell the previous model year machines, even if they were “new” aka NOS, there are many dealers in southern Oregon that sold old model years past 88. This regulation was solely enforced on manufacturers to stop producing new three wheeled ATV’s

I don't know many people that can rattle off all that stuff from memory... well done you're a true atc addict

Not sure where you’re from but me and all my buddies called them 3wheelers down in MS, never heard anyone call them a trike back then. We all had Big Reds and with the right tires they would float, forded many rivers and creeks trying to get to that good hunting spot. I finally got around to restoring mine a couple years ago and all my quad buddies were scared to death on it saying it was a death trap. Obviously I’ve been on quads for quite a while now but I swear there were places quads couldn’t follow when I on the Big Red.

@@SakoRichards We call them three-wheelers here in NY as well. We had a couple growing up as kids and that's what we learned to ride on. My father has a 1982 ATC 185S and my grandfather had a 1985 Kawasaki KLT 110. The 185S could get up to speed quicker because it was stronger but the 110 had an extra gear so it could still keep up when it got up to speed. They were both fun machines but the 185 was a total back killer. 😁

Thats what my friend rode. I had a 250 tecate. The tecate was the better motor . I was at least 50lbs heavier then he was. And riding a quad not a trike. Could beat him in a drag race. Hill climbs not so much😅. I had done some porting on the exhaust side though so don't know how they would compare stock.

have and ride a 86 250r, great shape and fun as hell to ride. have and ride a mint 84 big red 200 shaft, high low and reverse, and a second mint 200 chain drive, going after a nice 70 tomorrow I hope. there's rumored to be one in a crate in my town, but I expected to see out and about when his father passed and it never showed. I'm curious what the guy would have to have for that if he was to sell it. I'd guess 50 grand but wouldn't be surprised if it could fetch a quarter million.
