The water wheel is backwards meaning as you can see if you look at it, its actually lifting up the water on the other size meaning it is going far slower then it probably could go making it very in a efficient.

If I recall correctly, there was a study done to investigate if water flowing under or over a water wheel was better after a project to restore an old mill over in england (I think) where the mill was set up with water flowing over the top and dropping onto the wheel. They found that water dropping onto the top actually gave better performance. Your setup looks like it wouldn't have been hard to do the same. Shame you didn't.

There is enough drop that a test could be done either way although might goof up the shaft orientation. I've been going back and forth trying to decided. In our case, the wheel would have to be quite a ways down stream from the dam to gain the necessary height for the overshot. On the other hand, the overshot might have less issues with debris getting caught under the wheel (overshot might just go over).

How many Watts of power or pounds per foot of torque are you getting from this setup?
@r3d33m3dn78
6 жыл бұрын
Has nothing to do with torque. Its all about the rpms. What torque does give you (in this scenario), is the ability to turn a larger generator with more mechanical resistance at the same speed. Which in turn gives you the potential for more power up to a certain point.

using a colldctor with pipes you can force focus water into it and let excess water flow besides it so you will always have a consistant flow and never running into an i where there is too much water. so you never have to adjust the wheels hight or put a brake on it. the latter will be needed when using mechanical energy running particular devices. concreting the channel will also reduce resistance resulting in greater speed of water. the combination of speed and pressure will benifit the project into an extent where you can harnass mechanical and electric power either seperate or at the same time using just the 1 wheel. making the wheel widee results in more torque but less rpm. if you use only mechanical force as endresult you could even put a gearbox in between.

Water wheel is too heavy and too slow. try aluminium, or plastic ? with paddles that touch the centre barrel. Narrow the water feed to increase water pressure at point of contact. undershot is fine.

@@nubras2799 The Wheel Looks Far Too Heavy for the Water Pressure available / ( in use Here ) . I think :- Maybe ? Increase the water Pressure / or Flow . Or Lose Most of the Inertia Weight from the Water Wheel ? Aim, is to Spin the Wheel Faster with Less Water & more Water Pressure ? Or Have a Much Lighter Water Wheel Made from Plastic to reduce Weight, Thus making it Easier to Spin at faster speeds with the Same Flow of water. The Use of COGS / Gearing to increase to the Maximum Power Generation for Use Directly or to Charge Batteries When power is not required? Just my Thoughts, I'm not an Engineer or Scientist. The wheel is small. About 3 ft dia. I set it up that way not thinking I have enough head to make an overshot. I might be able to do it with some mods though. If I could raise the dam about another foot, then I might be able too. But I was also thinking about a bigger wheel. maybe a 6 ft wheel in undershot or a breast shot.

You install the wheel in a wrong way. It must rotate in the opposite direction. And yes, is better to use a larger wheel (larger diameter).
@DenverDave2
6 жыл бұрын
A larger diameter would provide more torque, but the shaft and the wheel would rotate slower. Of course gearing would compensate. In our case, yet to be proven, we are intending to match the RPM of the shaft to the desired rotational velocity. I'm not sure what you mean by turning the wrong way - this is an undershot water wheel, won't it turn in the direction of the water flow? Or are you talking about the orientation of the paddles?

a shame you had to damn up the entire creek, you could've diverted a small portion of the flow into a pelton water wheel and left the bulk of the creek in it's natural state... a much better way to go than your heavily intrusive venture here... not only that, a pelton wheel setup is the most efficient water wheel you can run, getting close to 90% efficiency at times. so yeah, no brainer, imo.... in general, the less impact we have on our environment we live in and are a part of, the better.

Too many engineering calculation errors , especially the waterway leading to the wheel ... undershot wheels, are tricky to operate with relative efficiency . The most egregious is the wheel buckets design and, the overall ratio dimensions of both. Given the incredibly abundant supply of water available , the wheel should be at minimum 6 times larger in diameter ,designed with a bucket to diameter aspect ratio much more narrow than the one being used . The rotational speed of the wheel , should attain without a load a speed nearly equal to that of the water current speed when ; the proper ratios are achieved, since the buckets should not be slapped by the impinging water The buckets should immerse at relative silence. I was never lucky enough to find a property for sale with such a beautiful water supply as the one in the video... so much power going to such awful waste ...a real shame.

thanks for posting. nice work. some thoughts..that is the worst bucket design i've ever seen. the buckets should confine the water within, not let it run out. a wheel thats part poncelet, part zuppinger might work. the speed at which the wheel is turning, unloaded, is what the loaded speed should be, roughly. NOTE you have head that is not being used. the drop-off (at 1:29) upstream of the wheel should be spanned. a flume could be installed in the channel, beginning perhaps five yards upstream of the wheel, this would allow the use of an overshot poncelet-style wheel. cheers
