This video was produced prior to Hurricane Milton smashing into the Florida coast less than 2 weeks later. Again, I was lucky as was all of my immediate family. Unfortunately, this was the worst of all possible scenarios for Florida. At least 12 people were confirmed dead from that storm which caused even more devastation to the west coast of Florida. My heart goes out to all who were affected, and I have been personally involved in providing some aid to the victims of these terrible storms. Even though the eye of that hurricane made landfall on the west coast, the damage from Hurricane Milton is being felt across the entire state after the storm caused tornadoes to rip through communities along Florida's east coast. Properties all across Palm Beach County were left destroyed Wednesday after a total of 126 tornado warnings were issued by the National Weather Service office. At least 19 tornadoes touched down across Florida (the worst being an EF-3), including communities in Wellington, where homes, a golf club and an animal conservation center were left in shambles. The level of damage in the tornado’s path is not something anyone here expected, because we were not inside the hurricane cone. We were not even under a hurricane watch or warning. Only a tropical storm warning. Some longtime Floridians have grown accustomed to the annual cycle of storms that can shatter and upend lives in a state known mostly for its balmy weather, sunshine and beaches. Although there has been immense loss and suffering after two hurricanes in 13 days, such challenging moments also bring out our humanity and compassion. I am proud to live in Florida where such strength and compassion brings the community together. We will rebuild and be even stronger.
