A tornado was spotted tearing across a Florida roadway on 9th October, just before Hurricane Milton made landfall. Tornadoes were also observed in various parts of the state throughout the day. By the evening of 9th October, the National Weather Service offices in Florida had issued 133 tornado warnings in total. The Miami and Tampa offices each issued 49 warnings, while Melbourne issued 35.
Hurricane Milton made landfall on 9th October along Florida’s Gulf Coast as a Category 3 storm, unleashing powerful winds, deadly storm surges, and potential flooding across much of the state. With winds exceeding 100 mph (160 kph), Milton spawned numerous tornadoes as a precursor to its arrival. When the storm struck Siesta Key at 8:30 p.m., it had maximum sustained winds of 120 mph (205 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center.
The storm surge affected much of Florida’s Gulf Coast, including densely populated areas such as Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota, and Fort Myers. Later on 9th October, Hurricane Milton was downgraded to a Category 2 storm as it moved inland but was expected to remain a hurricane while crossing the Florida peninsula on 10th October before entering the Atlantic Ocean.
