I took the first boat ride on the Great South Bay since Hurricane Sandy wrecked Long Island's South Shore. Hurricane Sandy's HUGE storm surge led to severe flooding causing major damage to Long Island and Fire Island waterfront communities. Houses are entirely gutted from waves pounding through them. Boats are piled in the marinas on top of one another or sunk in their slips.
Turning the boat toward Fire Island area we found all the buoys marking the Fire Island inlet were washed at least a mile back into the bay by the high surge. Robert Moses State Park had damage to the main highway that services the park while beach front erosion was also a problem.
The damage caused by Hurricane Sandy on the Great South Bay is nothing like I have ever seen in the past. I have been boating and fishing on Long Island's south shore for over 40 years and today's boat ride on the Great South Bay was the saddest day I have ever had on the water.
Maybe Tonight Fishing Charters fishes the waters of Great South Bay and Fire Island Inlet on Long Island New York for striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, fluke and other local species.
