how old was the transformer was it maintenance ? or faulty coil repair and how did the coil get faulty ?? kind regards

Yes you guys are correct, DC could not be transformed by transformers. The one showed in video is supplying regulated AC current to rectifier for AC->DC transformation.

please explain. my torch run on electric so it is same thing but would last longer than AA. it might need resistor though; something like 220 ohms 1/4 watt or similar.

Are you sure HVDC (high voltage direct current) ? In dc there is no way that a transformer can step up or down power .

+Higher-Ground Farm yep HVDC apparently is in use for long haul lines who knew thought thats why we dont use DC because of even worse losses over AC for transmission.
@olir614

@@Cinncinnatus DC is worse at lower voltages but these HVDC systems these enable lines to be in excess on 1MV with around 97% trasmission efficency at ~2-3000km. and you only need two cables compares to the three phase HVAC systems. issue is to get convert power to dc from ac and visa versa the components are more expensive. the break even point from DC to AC is around 1000km making it perfect for massive countries and intercontinental power sharing.

@@olir614 I had someone try to tell me that all transmission lines are DC. My favorite part was when they claimed a breaker panel converts DC to AC...

Lot of useful discussion. Now electrical energy can be transnitted on very high voltsges both on AC and DC. In a lay man view, there is no difference between ac current and dc current. But losses are less in dc transmission. Dc motors have more tarque and traction power. But both are convertible, ac current can be converted to dc and dc can be converted to ac current. It indicates that why car batteries are importsnt in our life. Here is one question that how a choke was producing high voltage in flourecent tube and how that piece of junk is replaced by an electronic circuit in a saver bulb?

The choke had a bimetallic strip and heater (lamp) based starter in parallel. When the fluorescent was started, current flowed through the bimetallic strip and heating lamp. Heat produced by the heating lamp bent the strip, interrupting the current. Interruption of the current induced a high voltage across the choke (inductor), which also appeared across the fluorescent lamp. This high voltage helped in striking the arc in the fluorescent lamp, thereby lighting it. After the lamp was lit, the choke counteracted the negative resistance characteristic of the fluorescent lamp by restricting the current flowing through it. The electronic ballast circuits used nowadays effectively work as SMPS ie 220V 50 Hz ac->dc->350V 20 KHz ac. This enables use of a much smaller inductor than a bulky choke due to the higher rate of change of current at the higher frequency. This small inductor is integrated with the electronic ballast unit at the base of the lamp

The coils of a motor are always alternating current, even if the input is DC. if the coils were energised with DC nothing would move, for long.

What? Generally AC motors have more torque than DC ones. DC transmission is only considered when for very high voltages (500kV and above) and great lengths (500km+) or for grid interconnections.
