Kern Canyon highway looks almost the same as it did when I drove it back in 1960 - 1963. Love the show, especially seeing how the area has or has not changed in the last 55 years.

I love all the small towns going and coming to Mammoth. Those clouds had an ominous look about them.

0:00 - 3:18 If you didn't know it you'd have a hard time believing you were driving through the 20 mile wide crater of a supervolcano, and the 600 ft deep pyroclastic flow that poured over the south rim (making up Sherwin Grade). I drove this stretch of 395 more times than I can count back in the early 70s, and had no idea whatsoever that Long Valley was the caldera of a supervolcano. I was in my 50s before I discovered this, and I've been enthralled with eastern Sierra geology ever since. The geological stories the Sierra Nevada tells are endless, and here in the midst of it all is the small resort town of Mammoth Lakes, at the foot of the Mammoth Mtn dome complex, right on the west rim of the LV caldera.

Plus the Volcano is still considered active as is Sugarloaf. Which you can’t really see unless you are an employee of the Geothermal plant or you are granted a pass by the Navy.

Ever since Owens Lake flooded last winter Owens Valley has been just crystal clear -- none of that toxic dust blowing off the lakebed.

5:07 One of my most memorable photos is from a book we picked up when we first moved to Mammoth, "The Mammoth Lakes Sierra" -- and it looked exactly like this, except it was taken from one of the peaks looking west at an approaching storm that was already dumping snow along the Muir Trail. The look was so rugged and imposing, and it is what keeps drawing me to the Sierra.

Decided to look up some facts about the Bakersfield area . WOW! Very interesting. Says it is the Country Music Capital of the West Coast. No wonder a bit of your background music in your videos has a country flair. Also found out Merle Haggard was born there and Buck Owen lived there and died there in 2006. He wrote a song 'Streets of Bakersfield" with Dwight Yoakam and I am assuming it is that Bakersfield. There is a house there called The Ablin House of Frank Lloyd Wright fame. Found out that Kern is the main oil producing area in the US. WOW! So much stuff. Besides its beauty, you live in a VERY interesting part of CA!!!

No Bakersfield is not the main producer of oil in the U.S. It is however the western most producer of oil in the U.S. big difference!

It is not Edward's AFB at Ridgecrest - it's China Lake Naval Air Warfare Center. Otherwise, good work!
