As an electrical engineer, I caught the exact thing with the flaw on Lasersabers design, need to limit the discharge current on the lithium battery to not blow the very low amperage BMS. Very impressed you caught that! Subscribed!

I am learning about lithium batteries, supercapacitors, solar power, EV's and am really enjoying your channel. I found you from searching for a video on the SAB MOSFET IC, thanks for testing it and showing what it does. In the last two months I acquired a pile of all unused LG 18650's between 2,000-2350 mAh. Each one is being tested. Currently have around 1400 tested, about 2800 cells in total. I also have 66 350 farad 2.7V maxwell supercapacitors and 22 3000 farad 2.7V maxwell supercapacitors. They are going to be used in a solar energy "learning" project and eventually a EV. First project is to design in cad and build three 14s 40p(atleast) 51.1v nominal lithium ion batteries each with a 22s 1p string of 350 farad caps. A standalone 22s 1p bank using 3000 farad caps will be connected in parallel through control circuits two the three parallel 14s lithium batteries. The 350 farad banks will also be connected to the batteries with control circuitry. All four supercap banks will also have equalization circuits and safety circuits. As well as three custom bms boards which are made by Batrium for the three lithium-ion batteries. Do you think the equalization and safety circuits you use are capable of sufficiently balancing and limiting the size of cap banks that I'm building?

Do supercapacitors work well with the alternator's regulator? For instance, does it provide a similar internal resistance to SLA batteries so that it doesn't run at full tilt and burn out the alternator due to too high of current? Also, will the alternator shut down cleanly when the SC's are full, preventing a voltage dump? I want to run a LiFePO4 starting battery in my boat but there are two problems with this, without running an external regulator with "smart" alternator and an Alternator Protection Device. 1: Lithiums have such low internal capacitance that the alternator wants to run full current to it, which it can't handle and causes overheating. 2: When the BMS shuts down the charging circuit, the resulting voltage spike runs back through the alternator, typically blowing out the diodes, etc.

I feel like the answer to that question would also help me as I'm thinking on building a super capacitor assisting electric motor system for my car. I thought about using the alternator as a generator...

Cheap way to do big resistors is light bulbs. You can put a 12v bulb in series with the battery and it will limit the current to safe levels. Even if you short the circuit behind the bulb the bulb will just light like normal so you cant overheat that resistor either if you not putting it into a enclosure. Yeah and they are small.
@zilym
7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but light bulbs are easy to break or burn out. A good power resistor is going to last forever.
@Nigel_Broatch
6 жыл бұрын
Another good thing about using a light bulb in this way is that they can have about 10x times their resistance hot compared to when they are cold. So at low current the bulb has little effect on the circuit, but at high current the resistance goes up and prevents too much current flow.

thanks for sharing your interesting project. I have built a house battery from 18650 cells and it works beyond expectations. This is in my motorhome. Now working with SuperCaps and was going to use a 12v bulb to limit the surge from the battery but your 200w resister looks like a better solution. I have tried to find calculations for this without success. Can you explain how you arrived at the resister that you have chosen? Thanks again, John

Thanks for sharing the knowledge. One Question: Would it be safe to connect a 12V Ultra-Capacitor Array in paralell with a Lead-Acid Car Battery so that each complement each other, or a Resistors circuitry would be needed ?

that is explained in this video kind of at the half way mark bro. also, connecting a battery to a cap without a thicc resistor or something will get spicy if they are really far away from eachother on voltage.

Your comment about High Heat and the Amazon has a big hole in it. When the trees feel too hot they release a rain trigger and thus cool down the area. Also the high temperature you are refering to is only a maximum of 37°C (98.6°F). Now when you leave the Amazon Basin the temperatures can reach 50°C (122°F). The main problem isn't the heat it is the acidity in the water. With a pH of 5.5 - 6 all the water is acidic and will eat most anything it comes in contact with. I enjoy your research and testing.

Very cool! Definitely going to cost a bit initially...but no more stupid cheap batteries dying and the winter cold cranking amps potential is going to be awesome! Can't wait for the complete mockup and the finally a prototype...so very cool! Only concern the distance from the trunk to the starter, going to need like 000 or 0000 wire to be able to handle the current

For a petrol engine that might be ok. A diesel will need need a bit more then that. You could also contemplate on putting the supercaps in the front and the battery in the back.

Especially since the super caps handle the bulk of the current..the battery is there just to keep the supercaps topped off when the engine isn't running correct? Only issue is how hot it gets under the hood, aren't supercaps rated to 85C

A lead acid battery should not get too hot either. I'm not sure how this goes. Maybe wrap the supercaps in a bit of rockwool just in case?

Someone else below was asking the same thing, so while I know you can't teach us Physics 2, I wonder if you can give a one sentence explanation in a comment about why you picked this value. I have friends that did this and used different values.

A cool mock-up. Only one comment, did you think of puttings some buffering on the green and brown twisted pair wires? If a the twisted pair gets shorted somewhere along the line it will fry the cable. A couple of 100 mA fuses will give the needed protection.

Very interesting video. I have at present two 12v batteries in series being charged by 230w solar panels. I would like to either place super capacitors in parallel to boost the batteries or replace them completely. My inverter is capable of outputting 2000w. How many 2.7v 500f capacitors will I need? Moreover how can I do my own simple calculations. Thank you.
@madelectronengineering

If your running a 24v DC system, you need two supercap strings in series put in parallel with your batteries to handle your inverter surge loads. It will reduce the strain on the batteries when you start hi amp loads. You would not replace your solar lead acid storage batteries with supercaps, it's just not feasible. Use them as a booster.

should use a isolated dc/dc converter lik a flyback converter to charge the supercaps that way u can hav the battery charging the caps without exposing them to the low impedience high draw of the starter but they can be putting in as much current as the batteries can safely handle in to the system even as the high current is happening

You may want to use a bi--stable relay instead, so your coil current consumption is zero during "on" and/or "off" stage. The only current you use is during the PIN (Pull-In) and the RST (Reset) at about 50-100 mSec. Needs a small trigger circuit for bi-stable relays. Hope this will help.

+eco3 systems I did see something about bistable relays, but don't they need a opposite current flow to shut them back off?
@eco3sys
7 жыл бұрын
You can have them with 1 coil (reverse polarity, that's the one you mentioned), than you have the one with 2 coils (usually a common (+); Pull-In (-) and Reset (-), that's it. As trigger, you can use a hex inverter CD-4049 with 2 gates for the 2 coil logic and the left-over 4 gates as driver for the two coils (2 gates in parallel for each of the coils). I'll be happy to forward a proven schematic per email to you.

Why do people claim the hybrid supercap has a higher gravimetric energy density than the EDLC type? Energy stored in a 100F/3v EDLC = 0.5 X 100 X 3 X 3 = 450 Joules. Energy stored in a 100F/2.3v hybrid supercap = 0.5 X 100 X 2.3 X 2.3 = 264.5 Joules. Assuming the same component weight (a fair assumption), then the EDLC is way ahead.

What's the scenario if the lights were left on over a long period of time which will drain the super caps completely, which in turn will drain the lifepo4 which will slowly discharge all its energy to the car head lights, or rather till the Lifepo4 bms low voltage cuts off output. Are you stuck? And needing a jump start from someone?
