The name of the island 'Hydra' does not differ from the Greek Ydra. The ancient Greek silent H was dropped and replaced by the apostrophe grammatical sign. They kept the initial H in the translation. The same is with Heraklion / Iraklion . The H is gone. Santorini (although it is called with this name in modern Greek) is from the Venetian name of the island (Santa Irene) . The original Greek name is Thera as you said. When people in Greece say where are you going this summer the response is Santorini 99% of the time and not Thera

the ancient Greek "H" was a breathing, so it was pronounced, otherwise it would be meaningless to have ever written it. The breathing was not written in ancient inscriptions (such as in stone), or in the manuscripts (such as parchment), it was 'understood' to be there. Writing of it is a relatively modern invention to make it clear where it was and was not pronounced.

@@MyMy-tv7fd Thats very true! 💯👍🏻Languages are organic & living & change with time. The Greek language is probably one of the oldest (if not oldest) living continuously spoken & documented languages on our great planet Earth, with 3,500 Years documented if you include Linear B. It’s also important to note that Santa or Santo is the Latin word for Saint (as opposed to the Greek: Agia & Agios). Eirini or Irini (Irene…which means Peace in Greek) is the name of a Church found in Perissa Town on the island of Thera that probably gave the name of the current island: Agia Irini = Santa+Irini = Santorini Some info I found online about the Church: 👇🏻 At the northern end of the village of Perissa, at the foot of the peak of Mesa Vouno (365 m), there are unique archaeological excavations - the ruins of the church of St Irene from the 13th - 9th centuries AD. It is probably from it that the island of Santorini takes its name. During research work in 1992, it turned out that under the foundations of the church there is an even older monument - an early Christian basilica from the 5th-6th centuries AD. Hope that helps people that were wondering about the name! 👍🏻

2:30 that's actually not quite true. All of these islands are written and pronounced with the "s" in Greek, just only in the nominative case. Modern Greek has four cases for nouns (forms that nouns take). So f.e. Naxos = nominative (who/what), Naxou = genitive (whose), Naxo = accusative (whom/where) and Naxo = vocative (when we call someone/ address something).

All true, but for foreigners let's make it easy, let's assume that when someone says I want to go to Paros, in Greece it will be (I want to go to) Paro, or : thelo na pao stin Paro, so in English you are correct, in Greek you are not, but you don't speak Greek.

A few summers ago, my wife and I spent a very pleasant four days in Hydra. Since we grew up with Leonard Cohen, for us this was "his island" so to speak. We went to his home in upper Hydra but it was closed. We also spent a little time in the Pirate Bar/Cafe in the harbor which he frequented. He lived in Hydra with Marianne Ihlen who inspired him to write "So Long Marianne". For anyone interested in this period on Hydra I recommend the book edited by Helle G. Goldman "When We Were Almost Young". Also, I would highly recommend taking the full day boat sail around the island. The captain gave a nice explanation of the island as we sailed completely around it. We anchored in a few coves and had some lovely swims and the crew prepared a lovely fish lunch. Great day.

The "s" in the end of names is only pronounced in nominative. In accusative/dative/ablative, the final "s" gets removed. So for example: "Αυτή είναι η Τήνος (This is Tinos)" BUT "Πάω στην Τήνο (i'm going to Τinos)". The reason you get justifiably confused is because in English there is no real difference between the cases, as there is in Greek.

@@GabrielTravelerVideos and wouldnt it also be that your audience expects international content or content from various different places around the world? I remember you saying that if you stay home for too long with your family and friends your views on youtube tend to go down which may be a problem as well. So moving around like this from country to country has become like a job for you in order to sustain the channel/views. What could be a solution to this? What if you decide to get a house someplace nice and make videos about your life there or from your home in california? Something like Jonna Jinton does, she very rarely travels. Her content is mostly about her life in the north of sweden with her dog, husband, family, friends and doing artistic things. But the thing is her audience expects such content and wants it. There are many other youtubers doing similar things, get a place somewhere and make videos about what its like to be there. Have you considered such a change in your youtube work/content in order to life a different kind of life? Could that be doable or how?

Hello there ! The way a name of an island is changing is because of Greek grammar. When the name is the object in the sentence it has the s in the end like Paros, Naxos etc. When the name is the subject in the sentence it hasn't got the s and transfers in Paro, Naxo etc. Example: Paros is a beautiful island. Greek: Ee(article) Paros eene oreo nisi. But : I'll go to Paros tomorrow Greek: Tha pao stin Paro avrio.

I thought the 's' on the end of names like Naxos, Tinos etc were the endings in the nominative case, i.e. when they are the subject of the sentence. They will take different endings depending on their function in the sentence. So, for example if a Greek speaker were to talk about the beauty of Naxos, the word Naxos would become 'Naxou'. I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.
