Hydrangea care instructions
Watering
In the summer months, due to the high temperature, the hydrangea needs quite frequent watering - every one to two days. The water should fall directly into the soil without wetting its leaves or flowers. We suggest you water it early in the morning so it is ready to face the heat of the day.
On the contrary, in the cooler months water it, only when the soil dries out.
Precautions
The hydrangea flower is very delicate. For this reason, you should be able to place the hydrangea in a semi-shaded area outdoors. Hydrangea loves the morning sun but does not prefer the midday heat.
It would help if you protected it from strong winds and direct sunlight, as wind and sun will quickly dry out its delicate flowers.
Transplantation
The hydrangea flower lasts throughout the spring season until the Autumn. Towards the end of autumn, the hydrangea loses its flowers, but its rich foliage remains. Then it is the right time to transplant your hydrangea into a larger pot or garden.
What we will want to achieve at that time is to establish a healthy root system before the heat of summer or the extreme cold of winter. It would be good when transplanting to use either brown soil or soil for acidic plants.
Fertilizer
Regarding the fertilizer that the hydrangea needs, it would be good to feed it - during Spring and Autumn to avoid the extreme temperatures of Summer and Winter - mainly with iron, but also with other fertilizers containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
You should pay attention to the amount of fertilizer because there is a risk that either the leaves will grow too much compared to the flowers, or that the plant will be toxic.
How to change the color of hydrangea flowers
Something worth mentioning is that the hydrangea is the only plant whose color you can determine.
For example, if you lower the pH of the soil with sulfuric acid, then the soil absorbs aluminum, causing the hydrangeas to turn blue. Conversely, if you raise the pH of the soil by adding limestone, your hydrangea will turn pink-fuchsia.
If you want to make this change, it would be good if the plant has already been planted for two (2) years to overcome the first shock of transplanting.
Also, the color change can last from two (2) weeks to a few months, as the color of the hydrangea towards the end of its flowering always takes on an autumn green-pink color.
