I have loved having the bladder because I know that 2.5 liters of water lasts me half a day hiking - I keep a separate bottle available for cooking, so it's only for drinking along the way. I grabbed an Osprey quick adapter that lets me click in the sawyer filter, and I can gravity filter from a CNOC bag into the bladder without taking it out of the pack. Still, having the water bottle adapter would be very handy for winter camping, as you pointed out. I appreciate you showing this option!

I installed a hose into a one pound peanut jar with a hole drilled into the lid and an O-ring to prevent leakage. I mounted it on my shoulder strap and took it on the AT from Amicalola Falls S.P. to Hot Springs last spring. I got the ultimate compliment from a random lady passing in the opposite direction in the Smokeys, when she told her friend "I gotta get me one o' them!" Little did she know that she would have to make one. My Sawyer Squeeze filter fit right into the hose. I used a 2 liter CNOC bladder to gravity filter water into the 26 fl. oz. bottle at water sources. I would fill the bottle, camel up, and carry a full bottle to the next water source. The real advantage over a bladder besides avoiding water leaking into my pack was that I could choose to guzzle water directly from the bottle if I took the lid off, which helped me get back on trail faster. Tinker, AT section hiker. Thanks, Frozen. Nice ready-made product. I skipped on the bite valve for more volume per draw, but you pointed out the drawback. When it was very full, it would drip on me.

I'm working in getting into back packing, along with my older son. We have a plan of hiking the AT after he's graduated high school. I got interested in making an attempt watching your videos back in 2019. Just need to work on my skills and get out there hiking and packing. I actually really like this solution as I do Like a bladder but also carry an empty bottle as well for things like adding a Nuun tab (which I do not want in my bladder for obvious reasons). This may actually be worth the switch to me. I use both, a smart water bottle and a Nalgene from time to time, it just depends on the day :). I would likely use this more with a Nalgene though just for the ease of filling it up.

The good thing with this, is you could put a Sawyer inline and filter the water before it gets to your mouth. The one thing i hate with the hose, is when youve got a good pace going, are breathing heavy and you go to take a sip, there's air in the hose. So now youre breathing heavy, siphoning the water out and then it blasts to the back of your throat causing you ti choke......😒 Maybe its just me, but a good find none the less. Im in Canada so i probably dont qualify.
@8470tony

Looks like an infomercial to me. A glaring flaw behind this system is that head pressure is needed to provide enough supplemental force for the user to draw water. In other words, the wider the container is, the better. You’re gonna feel like you’re sucking peanut butter through that tube.
@onebottlehydration1865
2 жыл бұрын
There's vents in the lid that are blocked by a one-way valve so air can get in as you draw water out. The neat thing about the One bottle system is that I've made the vents vertical instead of horizontal, so they can screw into the small drinking spout of that flip-top!
@8470tony
2 жыл бұрын
Your response and optimism are appreciated. However, there is a reason why hydration bladders are so wide, and it has nothing to do with the venting, which adds more restriction. It’s simple head pressure. The more surface area that is pushing down on the fluid, the easier it is to pull through the tube. It’s a bit disingenuous for both of you to compare these to a bladder when the only elements shared, are a tube and water. Further, the larger the tube is, the more a user will have to combat against the minimal head pressure afforded by a skinny bottle. Still seeing peanut butter coming through that tube… The most successful way of pulling fluid with this system is to wear those bottles on your head like a beer hat. This way, the small amount of head pressure available from a skinny bottle can be combined with that of a siphon.

I like bladders for shorter hikes when it's warm out because you can fill them with ice to keep your back cool for a while. They're also excellent for staying hydrated when you need your hands on a bike, motorcycle, kayak, etc. Plus, whenever I talk a date into going hiking (because I'm cheap 😀), having ice water on tap makes me look like a stud lol

I would love the water bottle system. I am 82 years old, very disorganized, and have attention deficit disorder. For almost a year now, I have found it nearly impossible to remember to stop what I"m doing in one room or another throughout the day and go to the kitchen ro take drinks of water. I was told that my muscle cramps are moat assuredly from dehydration. I thought how nice it would be to find some kind of a water "satchel" I could wear around the house and sip away as needed all day long. Lo and behold while searching for a "wearable water satchel," I came upon links featuring hydration bladders. Scrolling led me to your post, and it sounded exactly like what I need. I will try to figure out how to save contact info for your site so I can order one in the event I am not chosen to receive one. I am so glad I found this. I was afraid nothing like this existed and I"d have to dream up something by myself. I am more than glad I found this...I am ecstatic! THANK YOU for your post.

I'm interested in the disposable water bottle system. My question is for the nalgene system, doesn't there become a pressure differential issue? With a bladder the bag compresses as you drink due to the vacuum, but a nalgene can't collapse by its nature/design. Does this cause any issues?

Bladder vs bottles - it doesn't have to be an either/or question (unless you are a gram counter). I split my water, usually 80% bladder and 20% bottle. If I drink the bladder dry, I still have water til next source and can start conserving. At pack break spots with water sources, I drink from bottle and filter more, saving bladder for on trail. At camp, I cook from bottle avoiding purging bladder,

It looks like a replacement for the Blue Desert Smartube...paid about $20 for the tube and cap for regular water bottle plus nalgene size. This guy wants money for each size. You can make your own easily..drill hole for tube and then drill smaller hole for air vent, placing tape over that smaller hole and then a slit in tape for pressure equalization. They all leak if held upside down (betting this one does too) anyways so be aware.

I just got back from a trip and was auditing my gear, looking to trim some weight. One thing that jumped out at me was how often I complained in my trail notes about the bladder. When we got started for the day, it was easy to get it in the sleeve in my pack, but then at every water stop it was a wrestling match to get the dang thing back in the sleeve when it's full of water and my pack has all the stuff in it. The choice was to either almost fully unpack my bag, or wrestle the thing in as deep as I could get it and have it flopping around behind my neck. I am definitely getting one of these systems! Losing the bladder will also shave 6 ounces from the pack!
