From watching all these videos you realize that aircraft emergencies happen every day. Many are from mechanical failures on aircraft of all types. Yet it is rare to have injuries or damage to aircraft from these incidents.

You are correct. It's only since the introduction of Flight Tracking Apps and LiveATC that average Joe is more aware of these incidents. Can you imagine the incident ratios back in the 60's and 70's!!!

I had a series of flights for one business trip. Leaving Memphis, just before turning onto the runway smoke billowed down the right side of the plane. We were told it was hydraulic fluid that leaked onto something hot. Flight canceled but we had to stay on the hot plane for 45 minutes. Picked up another flight later that day to Atlanta and on final, the pilot aborted the landing because another plane turned onto the runway. Flight out of Atlanta to Albany, NY uneventful but 12 hours later than our original arrival time. Flight from NY to Dallas I was on the right side and saw fluid streaming out of the engine; reported it to the flight attendant who reported it to the pilots and one came back to look at it and I heard him say “hydraulic leak.” We were close to Dallas and landed there. Flight from Dallas to Memphis, horrible thunderstorms all the way. Scary. Glad I didn’t have dentures, and when the lightning flashed I swear I saw a gargoyle on the wing staring at me.🤣 I hope that’s all the “events” I have when I fly more. Four in 1 trip was enough, except for the flight I had from Denver to Houston where a lady behind me had a baby with a poopy diaper and she wouldn’t go change it. I was sick. And there were no air vents. She might have been out of diapers but I think the flight attendants could have found one or comped her some cloth napkins to make a diaper. 💩=🤮

To add some context on recent united issues from someone who has no love for United nor Boeing (haven't flown on United in many years) but likes having context: - united has the third largest fleet in the world (beind AA (1) and Delta (2)) , almost one thousand planes - united is 45% of the market share of sfo by seat (as of 2022), the next highest is AA at only 14% aka if a flight is having issues at sfo, it's more likely to be united then any other airliner. However, it's fifth for most united flights, but will be second largest for capacity this year* - united has a big maintenance hub at sfo E.g. United is more likely to have issues then smaller airliners purely due to size. Those issues are more likely to happen at sfo then most other airports. *As just googled to verify the firth number, adding this quote: "San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is the only airport on the list that fails to cross the 100,000 flight threshold. However, in terms of capacity, measured by ASKs, which is counted by multiplying seats by the number of kilometers flown, it would be the second-largest airport in United Airlines’ schedules in 2024" - simple flying ... So guessing united from sfo is flying longer flights then other hub locations? I have been seeing comments that due to COVID, experienced mechanics retired, and due to work stoppages, maintenance requirements are up due to flying older planes, meaning higher workload for maintenance staff that may have less experience then they would a few years ago. But the more dramatic issues like the wheel issue appears to be manufacturing defect and not maintenance oddly enough. Delta also lost a wheel last month, wondering if same manufacturer 🤔

@@wilburfinnigan2142from what I've read/heard from those in the industry, airplane wheels shouldn't fail in the way it did outside of manufacturing defect, and while some metal fatigue can be visible, it's tested for on a set schedule by manufacturer minimum to try and catch the issue-- not sure about wheels specially, but early unexpected fatique thus can be missed. It'll be interesting to see the ntsb report.

@@wilburfinnigan2142 Manufacturing defects are to be caught by the manufacturer. Airlines maintenance don't have the skills nor the responsibility to find manufacturing defects. Untill the report is out, we can't know for sure if this incident is on the manufacturer or on the United maintenance, so it wouldn't be wise to jump to conclusions or accusations.

Good to see Airbus making the news for a change. The media has been pretty preoccupied with Boeing lately and seem to forget that stretch ten or fifteen years ago when the automation in Airbus planes would randomly decide it could fly better than the pilots could including at least one crash at an airshow.

That "crash at an air show" happened back in 1988, which is nearly 40 years ago, not 10-15 years ago lol. And there was no evidence of there being anything wrong with the automation aside from the word of the captain who crashed it.
