Gas shocks can produce a harsh ride because older cars weren't designed for them.
Older cars were designed for hydraulic shocks. You can feel the difference between the two. You can manipulate a hydraulic shock with your hands, but gas shocks require tools to compress. When used in the wrong vehicle, ride quality is drastically stiffened.
