In this hands on hydroponics training session, hosted by the African Youth Action Network (AYAN) and supported by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, refugee parents in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement are taken into the practical side of sustainable farming.
Led by Turyamureeba Amon, Head of Operations at Hydroponic Farms, this session equips participants with the skills to manage and maintain a hydroponic garden, allowing them to grow plants without soil, conserve water, and adapt to challenging environments with limited resources.
This video takes you through the practical training phase, where participants explore:
• Hydroponic systems: How to set up and use both passive and pump-based systems, including solar-powered options.
• Fertilizer management: Key insights into using NPK-19 and calcium nitrate, with step-by-step instructions for correct measurements and applications.
• Power outage solutions: Amon demonstrates how to keep water flowing and plants hydrated even when electricity is unavailable, ensuring crops thrive through adaptable, sustainable methods.
• Pump demonstrations: The participants see different types of pumps (manual and solar-powered) and learn how to manage water flow with or without power, including systems designed to retain water for several days.
Amon’s wealth of knowledge ranging from hydroponics and project management to accounting and entrepreneurship adds a unique and insightful perspective because he is able to simplify complex systems so parents can confidently adopt these techniques in their own gardens, empowering them to achieve sustainable food production for their families and communities through entrepreneurship.
Why This Training Matters:
In refugee settlements like Kyaka II, access to resources like water, soil, and electricity is often limited. Hydroponics offers a powerful solution to grow more food with fewer resources, enhancing food security and self-sufficiency in these communities. This training is a key part of AYAN’s broader mission to uplift refugee communities through innovation and capacity building.
Watch this 5 minute video to experience the energy and engagement as refugee parents embrace this groundbreaking agricultural method. From theory to practice, they are on a journey to transform their gardens and lives, with the support of @Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and the expertise of Turyamureeba Amon.
