I like your van but I went on the company site and learned more about it and found I wasn't as excited when I finished my research. Like you pointed out in this video, I found a number of things I would change to suit my personal needs. I have owned 1 class A 2 5th wheels and now a tow behind travel trailer.. I .bought this rig used. It was a 2016 and I bought it in 2017. I have already made some heavy changes in its setup inside. Nothing that I can't return to origonal function should I decide to sell it. ( I am seriously contemplating a van in 2 years. My wife passed away in early 2000 and 4 yrs later I sold my home and land, got rid of much of my possessions, bought a 5th wheel and headed to Florida. I am now on Social Security and recieve a nice disability check from the VA so steady income each month. I also have all my medical for free through the VA where ever I happen to be. Right now it is Tampa. Your video's are very informative and you present your topics well.. Thank you Bruce

Finally, an in-depth and honest review of the Akitv. What I appreciate about your review is that it is coming from someone who actually lives in it full time, not someone who just went to the dealership or RV show and jotted down some notes. I hear that Hymer will be coming out with an Aktiv on the MB Sprinter chasse soon, they call it the Grand Canyon in Europe. This will increase the approach and breakover angles of the camper. I believe there are some after market skid plates you can buy for the undermount alternator? Yes, you are right, the drawer fridge is the way to go. I would also like to see it mounted higher, not sure if that's realistic? I wish the Truma Combi ran off of diesel or gas instead of propane. That propane tank under the camper looks hazardously low, looks like its already taken a hit or two? The KZitem vloggers "TheFitRV" have a video on a really great screen they had installed in their Promaster, check it out! The shower head should be replaced for sure, good call. I wonder about how secure the European style polycarbonate Seitz windows are? Most campers over there use them so I guess they can't be that bad? Didn't know about the 12v plugs not working all the time, wonder if there is a way to rewire? Love the shades! I hope the folks at Hymer watch this video! Safe travels!

@Nitram Midnite Thank you kindly for your comments! Yes I saw that too on the new MB coming out in 2019. I've even seen some pics inside. It looks very interesting. There are some smaller differences but it looks the same in some areas. UGH...I hate propane. I'd love to take that thing off. I don't even use my propane stove. Ok so you saw it too, the hit. I didn't do that, which means somebody who drove or off loaded it from the truck hit something. I never even noticed it. When you look at it from above, it doesn't look banged up like that. oh, good to know on the FitRV screen I'll check it out. I love their channel too. So far no issues with the Seitz windows. I really like it actually. Have you had issues with it before? I hope Hymer watches too! lol

This was a great review! Credible because you actually lived in it, and are not a sales person. Love the logical way you explained each item. Thank you for the great insights into generator placement (disaster waiting to happen), and the propane nozzle (major oops for US market). With regard to screen door, similar problem faced by The Fit RV folks. He replaced the screen with a cheap Amazon mosquito screen which you can attach with velcro and magnets. Its a walk thru type flap, and very effective. No more pulling, just walk through and it closes like the Red Sea behind Moses. Spare tire - No, you need to put that back on asap! I took mine off, noting that RV was 100 lbs lighter. On Interstate 5, at 110F heat one rear tire blew out. Because I did not see it immediately, the second one blew out too (dually) on same side!!! I pulled over to shoulder and was 6 inches from freeway trucks and cars in the middle of nowhere. Called for police escort. Called AAA. They had no landau to tow my RV (since rear tires were shot), and I had to call numerous places to find out who had tires my size, and finally got someone to come after 5 hrs of waiting and 100F inside the RV. Cost me $1000. When I got to my destination, I had all 7 tires changed and got my spare back. No more chances. Lost a whole day and was miserably hot with my dog due to missing spare tire. Please keep that tire on! Little things like that can mount up to a perfect storm. Its the little things. Lots of them at the same time.

Your screen track is recessed so you can spray silicone lube in that area. One quick spray along the recessed track and wipe off any excess that may have gotten on the outer frame if any. It will make a world of difference. Plus dirt doesn't stick to silicone spray like it does to oil based lubes. Hint: Don't by the Liquid Wrench brand silicone spray if you try this. It has a really strong smell that sticks around. You may be able to just spray the nylon guide foot that runs in the track and than running the door open and closed a few times to work the lube in. Than repeat if needed.

@@storychasing Silicone spray will actually repell dirt once it dries and leaves no residue. You'll need to reapply it every so often with a touch up and that will keep it working smoothly. I worked for a home builder for years doing the final punch lists. Silicone spray was used on everything from sticky drawer guides to tight window sashes, sliding doors and screens, ect. It was a life saver.

@@theShamrockShepherdWagon Hi Sue. The GUNK brand silicone spray works fine and the smell doesn't linger anything like the Liquid Wrench brand. Still allow it to air out for a couple of hours after spraying and all that will remain is the slight residue of the actual silicone itself. I haven't tried any of the other brands besides the two but I see some now have Teflon added. That would work really well but I can't speak for the smell they may have. Good Luck!

We have the same Hymer Aktiv 1.0 , 2018 and have been using it for a year now and my wife and I love it. We also have the extra twin bed for the front for our kids to sleep. It our shower ours came with the faucet that has the on/off button? Not sure why your RV didn’t? Also just a side note I found after driving to our location the LP Gas bleeding port was leaking, and all you have to do is hand tighten it. So now I’m always checking that so I don’t loose any of our LP Gas ect. I have also found that the spare tire on the back is setting off the bumper sensors and we are off and on getting a caution fault on the Dodge dashboard ect. Also I wish Hymer would put a switch to turn off the buzzer on the Dodge to turn it off so, when boon docking and the volt start , starts the engine it won’t wake up the people sleeping in the front , and with all the display lights that come on. Thanks for all your videos and take care.

I know I can't be as stealthy with a class c RV, which I'm getting soon to live in, but it really does come down to personal situation and cost. Sprinter van conversion Van's aren't cheap so it seems the smaller the camper, the more expensive. Mine is 25k and I've seen class A's going for 19k meanwhile. I'm sacrificing stealth for saving money and in a class c, you still can park in urban places as long as it isn't downtown parking. I also have a dog so I need the space and I like being clean so I need a good shower (I did the gym showering when living in a car but it means ALWAYS having to travel for it and using gas to get to it then rushing to work versus having it in the vehicle). I found my middle ground and I'm sure I'll be fine so everyone watching this just needs to find theirs based on needs and location.

Another good video. I can fully understand the complaints you have about your van. I think if more women were involved in planning the types of bath sinks and showers to put in a van or camper these problems would take care of themselves. The fridge door....really? I can see why that's a little irritating. It's almost like no one tests out the prototypes before they build tons of them. I've been online looking at all kinds of campers for a while now and I find it amazing how little storage most of them provide. No outlets in the bathroom for a hairdryer. No outlets around the stove and sink area to plug in a coffee pot. No place to store towels or washcloths in the bathroom or soap in a bathroom shower. I completely understand that there's only so much room to work with. I was checking out a 21" pull-behind Ember brand yesterday online. They are made by the granddaughter of the Jayco campers. It was loaded with storage and she even fit a tiny pantry closet in the kitchen area as well as an overhead cabinet (which they all have) and drawers in the base of the sink cabinet. I guess it surprises me that these types of issues are even a problem any longer with soooo many people living full and part-time on the road. Take care. Can't wait for your next video. I know many that I am trying to get caught up on were done long ago. But I'm trying to catch up. Stay safe.

I went to an RV show last year. I found the seats were really comfortable but the table needs to be more stable. I sat there about 2 hours and talked to the dealer people. I like the cassette toilet, not crazy about the shower. Bed area with lots of storage is nice. Agree with you almost all. Don't like the exposed bottom. wish they enclosed them, heated water tank would be nice. That underhood generator location is pretty bad. I like travato 59KL too but hymer aktive definitely has more advantages. Thank you for the video!

Hi Amber: I liked your video, especially because I own a Winnebago class B, Trovato 59G. The layout is very similar. Winnebago has eliminated The spare tire entirely (that space is now used by the Onan generator). They have included a emergency kit, and I can't remember exactly what's in it. It basically gives you the ability to pump air and sealant into a tire to get going again, unless of course you have a blowout, but it also has automatic remote tire pressure sensing so a blowout should be a very remote possibility. Regarding your screen door sticking, try a little Johnson's paste wax where any track surfaces rub with the screen traveler. Wipe it on wipe it off. I do woodworking and it's amazing how well a little wax works. You can get a tin of Johnson's paste wax at home depot for less than $10, and it'll last for years. HAPPY CAMPING!

Just the slightest spritz of a silicone based lubricant on that screen door track, will have that door sliding effortlessly in a second. Also, changing that shower head to a valved model would be a piece of cake, even if hose replacement is also necessary. Before you modify anything on the outside of your vehicle, you may want to get in touch with the company that you purchased it from and check if it would still be under warranty if you do those things, and then tell them or show them this video of the changes you suggest. Because they can't make any changes to their product if they don't get the feed back from people that drive it! You do have a nice rig though! I hope you have put a replacement fund way in an account you can easily get at a moments notice, just in case you need to replace it in some year in the future. Pamela Quesnel Glad you enjoyed Pamela. Oh yes the class c will have much more room and storage, but you have to decide if space is worth what you'll lose - not being as nimble and possibly having a tow car. That's what I was dealing with and decided to go for the Hymer instead.

That Guy Nope it's actually nice. As soon as I get out of the grocery it goes straight into the van and stowed away in cabinets and fridge. I take a nap where ever I want, I can grab a jacket or something I might have forgotten quickly because my house is with me. As for picking up a date.....welll...I travel full-time. It's kind of hard to date unless it's somebody in the RVing community and if I were to date, I'd meet them somewhere. If you're going to be more stationary and live in your van than you might get the weird, "guy living in a van down by the river" comments, but if you spin it in away that doesn't seem sleezy you'll be find. Or else UBER there. hahahaa

Thank you for your very comprehensive videos, you’re one of my favorites! Have you been in colder climates? If so, how cold, and we’re you able to stay warm? In the warmer weather how do you keep a comfortable temperature. How comfortable is the mattress? I’ve heard some say that they purchased a mattress topper, have you? Do you fold your bed up to get to the lower storage areas? As a solo traveler do you find storage space adequate? If you had to replace your coach would you buy another Hymer? How much solar do you have and it meet your needs? I test drove a Hymer and am seriously considering taking the plunge. There are so many features that I like about the Hymer and I haven’t found any other coach that I feel meets my needs-length, unobtrusive, affordability and most of all the warranty. One last question-have you ever had a mouse in any of your coaches? If so how did you address the problem, and prevent future entry? I apologize for so many questions but I consider you trustworthy. Thanks much. Janice

Janice McKinnie Thank you so much and glad you enjoyed my videos. 😌🙏I tend to stay away from cold climates, especially now in the Hymer van because the pipes are exposed underneath and I don't really care to winterize my van. I'd just prefer to move south. I didn't purchase the mattress topper. I seemed to have become accustomed to the firmness of the mattress that came with the Hymer and quite honestly I really prefer it now. Feels good on my back. I crawl under to get to the lower storage - it's much easier. I certainly had to downsize but yes, I have everything I need. I mean, couId I buy 5 more pairs of pants and some shirts? Sure I'd love to, but I feel like what I have serves me well and I really have plenty. I probably have at least 25 shirts and 6 pants, not including yoga pants....lol Yup would definitely buy another Hymer. I love mine. I have 250 watts of solar but feel I could use a little more 350-450 would be good, but I consume a lot of energy from my batteries since I work all day on computers, charging computer equipment etc. On days when I drive it's not an issue, but if I sit for several days and there's some clouds I start the underhood generator. I have had a mouse in my previous RV and I never want one again. I put lights under my van, sometimes pop the hood and I spray peppermint essential oil spray around my vehicle each night if I'm in a place where I think I there are mice. Hope that helps!! Happy Thanksgiving

Well done, I appreciate owner views, compared to dealers. My issue would be the lack of driver seat travel for a 6’ + person. On long trips I drive with almost a straight leg position, the lack of tilt wheel and limited telescope may add to the problem. Enjoy the desert, your coast videos were incredible.
@storychasing

johnru1 I'm sure there are 6-foot individuals that own a Hymer, I just don't know any right now to ask. Yes, I understand the straight leg position. I'm short and still like to do that. It was odd in the beginning driving the Promaster, but I got used to and actually, it's very comfortable. Even on long days of driving, I don't feel uncomfortable in that position. Glad you liked the coast. Just a few more to finish up the PCH.

I saw one of the swing away tire rack on a Bob Wells video once. They also have a swing away carrier rack. They are out there. It would take longer for roadside assistance to help you because they do not carry tires. You should check with your roadside assistance to see if you are covered on that one. You have a beautiful rig. Thanks for the video.

great informative video, thanks for sharing. to gain more ground clearance get a bit bigger tires, 235 or 245 over the 225. AND go to Sumo Springs, though it looks like you have sumo springs listed in the credits. you can gain over an inch more clearance with these. this coach seems cheaply built. And not well thought out. the refrigerator is ridiculous. so is the shower. those windows though are fantastic. vent is great too.
@storychasing

Kerry Shrode Thank you so much and glad you enjoyed my videos. 😌🙏 Thanks for the recommendations. I did install the sumo spring bumpstops several months ago so that gave about a 1 inch lift and helped the sway. I switched out the tires but it's still 225 all terrains. The problem with the bigger tires is it's a very tight fit with larger tires and some Hymer owners had to "modify" that area to accommodate larger tires. I'm not sure I want to hack away at my wheel well just yet. :) Most everything is great, but some stuff is definitely cheap.

Very nice review. But I would like to comment on your issue with the USB port. In the video it appears that you have plugged you phone charger into the 110 plug which would require the inverter to be turned on. I think you should unplug you cable from the back of the charger and plug it into the USB slot and then you should not need the inverter.

It is actually a RAM ProMaster 2500 159 wheel base high roof. FCA Chrysler no longer calls the commercial division Dodge. And since Chrysler is currently owned by Fiat it is actually based off of the Fiat Ducato commercial cargo van popular in Europe. The only full sized front wheel drive commercial van available in North America. It has an American spec Chrysler 3.6 liter 280hp V6. Also has Fiats 3.0 litre 4 Cylinder Diesel available but they’re rare....

Very insightful video! It looked like the solar panels were mounted to the roof. Is that correct? If so, does Hymer offer a roof rack that would attach to the RAM Promaster? A roof rack would provide the flexibility to change out the solar panels as the technology advances. I like your suggestions especially...the fridge!!

Wow, great review. Pros and cons. Hymer needs to watch this. Is this a front wheel drive vehicle. If so how does it handle and does it where you out when you drive it? I have a 33' class C. Even with the chassis work I've done, after about 3 hours of driving I'm worn out. It's a 2016 with a very comfortable interior. Do you get claustrophobic in yours from time to time. Thanks for sharing. Good job👍.

HDLowrider Thank you! It handles really well especially with the shorter wheel base. I don't get as tired driving this vehicle as I did with my class C. It's almost like driving a big SUV. I never feel claustrophobic because I live outdoors a lot. I open the sliding door and let the environment in. It's quiet amazing.
