Karen, it is straight out of the Old Testament. There is a story in I Samuel 4-7 where the Israelites foolishly take the Ark of the Covenant (representing God's presence with Israel) out to battle with them and it is captured by the Philistines. God sees to it that it brings them so much grief that they voluntarily return it. During the celebrations upon its return, Samuel sets up a stone there and names it Ebenezer ("stone of help") and says "Thus far the Lord has helped us" (7:12). So it is just a visual reminder of God's help, something we all need to take us through times when God seems distant. One of the things I love about older hymns is their rich allusions to the Old Testament, something certainly enjoyed by Christians of that time who apparently were much more familiar with all the scriptures than most of us seem to be today. Thank you for your kind comments and keep growing!

Thank you, this hymn probably pops up in my private devotions more often than any other simply due to the fact that it expresses my human fickleness and Christ's great overarching grace so well. It blesses me to know that others enjoy it and the story behind the words. Christ's blessings on you as well.

David Duerr I have known this hymn for many years, but only recently learned that there are 5 verses, and I particularly enjoy the last verse. O that day when free from sinning, I shall see thy lovely face. Thanks for telling the histories of these wonderful hymns and the lives of those who wrote them.

While he did associate with Unitarism he gave a sermon late in life describing Jesus as being infinitely lovely as both God and Man he did believe in the divinity of Jesus

Thank you so much david, i look forward to reading the other histories. So moving and nourishing of our own faith. Also the sensitive piecing together of the versions. But what does Ebenezer mean?

Thank you for asking this question! Because of it, I looked online and was able to read ALL about it. Without your question I don't think I would have. Thus, missing ANOTHER teaching moment in the word of God. Found this at desiringgod.org / Then, to commemorate God’s mighty intervention on behalf of his people, Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen and called its name Ebenezer; for he said, “Till now the Lord has helped us.” So the Philistines were subdued and did not again enter the territory of Israel. And the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. (1 Samuel 7:12-13) In Hebrew, Ebenezer means “stone of help” (eben = stone; ezer = help). Samuel wanted the people to remember, not just for a few days, but for years, for decades, for generations, how God had come to the rescue of his people when they humbled themselves before him. They were vulnerable, with their enemies approaching, and they did not deserve God’s rescue, having been chronically unfaithful. And yet in his gracious fidelity to his convent people, God intervened with thunder to throw Israel’s enemies in confusion and turn their enemies into the vulnerable nation.
