"Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ." -2 Timothy 2:3
On a holiday, known as Whit Monday - seven weeks after Easter - in 1865, the children of Sabine Baring-Gould's Sunday school were invited to join celebrations in the neighboring town of Yorkshire, England. Baring-Gould thought the children should have a song to sing as they marched along, carrying their crosses and banners on the way to Yorkshire. However, he could not find an appropriate song, and so he sat up most of the night before the holiday, writing verses. By morning, he had completed his task.
As he told of his composing, Baring-Gould said, "The song was written in a very simple fashion, without thought of publication. The task was done in great haste, and I am afraid that some of the rhymes are faulty. I am certain that nothing has surprised me more than its popularity."
