This hymn is a prayer addressed to Lord Vishnu for cure from diseases and to alleviate the effects of illness. Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician and ultimate healer, is an incarnation of Vishnu. Vishnu is believed to have the power to heal the sick.
In the Hindu way of life, the One Supreme Universal Consciousness is described using many names. In the form of Lord Danvantari, we invoke the healing qualities of this Universal Consciousness. In this hymn Lord Dhanvantari is first hailed as the all-pervasive Supreme consciousness in the form of Vishnu. He is hailed as a healer and as the granter of Amrta, the beverage of immortality. He is praised as the slayer of various evil forces and thus a protector of His devotees.
One of the slokas here says:
शरीरे जर्जरीभूते व्याधिग्रस्ते कलेवरे
औषधं जाह्नवीतोयं वैद्यो नारायणो हरि: ।।
It means “When the body is worn out and tormented by disease, Ganga water is the medicine and Lord Vishnu is the doctor.” It is said that sincere recitation of Roga Nivarana Stotram can cure a sick person.
